Before the LEA took over our filtering we used Censornet V4 (which was excellent).

The LEA have just moved to Netsweeper and are evaluating Bloxx.

Give Tim Lloyd a call @ Censornet - tell him I sent you.

I believe version3 is still free.

Smoothwall :D Used it in two schools now and LOVE IT. Great support from some people on here, its widely used by many on here, comes in a few flavours a DIY build your own nix box and put the software on that or buy an all in one hardware appliance for the job thats pre-loaded and built by them.

Support is excellent and if you search here for Smoothwall you will see MANY happy users :)

There are some excellent case studies on the smoothwall site:

http://download.smoothwall.net/pdf/casestudies08/baines.pdf by a certain Ric Charlton (whoever that man could be ;) )

http://download.smoothwall.net/pdf/casestudies08/settlecollege.pdf by a certain John Smith (again whoever could he be ;) )

They don't gain financially by doing them or anything we did them for the love of the product :) I found it solved everything!

John, you really are a crazy individual... I am glad you are happy! Somethign that might please you even more... Phil is working on the FP3 "upstream proxy" improvements. We have put in some bits that we hope *might* be some use to you - certainly you'll be able to chose an upstream proxy dependant on site, and the auth stuff may allow you to authenticate against North Yorks' proxy. I'll try to bother your pals at the LEA tomorrow though, see if I can help them behave more frielndly!

Just to clarify for those who aren't yet SmoothWall customers ;) you dont need to install any *nix if you want to install smoothie on VM/own hardware, it does all the hard bits for you.

@Rick - did not know Intake was an academy now! Poor showing from a man who has lived in West Leeds for nigh on 5 years (I'm in Wortley).

Smoothwall here too, very happy with it, easy to use and does the job a treat. 1400 users and 700+ machines.

As John alluded to, I have a UTM... it's brilliant! I also have a similar sized clientbase to you and can testify that it cost nowhere near £7k!!!

The great thing about Smoothwall's (hardware) product is that you can take it out of the box, plug it in and it will give you a satisfctory filtering level without any effort. Tweak it and it becomes a lot better!!!
