cookie_monster Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I have a friend overseas who's PC needs looking at but I can't connect to them as they can't get a direct internet connection for me to use anything like VNC. I know that you can use products where the user browses to a website and installes an agent which then lets you connect as they initiated the connection. Smoothwall use one when they do remote support but I can't remember what it's called. Does anyone know of a free product a bit like that? Thanks.
SYNACK Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 (edited) This gives them an icon to click that gives gives a VNC connection to your machine outbound so that it traverses firewalls. Geek to Live: Tech support with UltraVNC SingleClick - Feature - Lifehacker there is also teamview - web based: http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx or get them to put logmein on their pc or windows live mesh https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?hp=6 https://www.mesh.com/welcome/default.aspx Edited August 12, 2009 by SYNACK 1
FN-GM Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 LogMeIn will do the trick - https://secure.logmein.com/
RabbieBurns Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Teamviewer is free for non-commercial use. Works just as well as logmein TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet
john Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Teamviewer is the tool and that is what Smoothwall use as well (they pay for it and have a posh customised version as well )
cookie_monster Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 Teamview that's what I was trying to think of. Cheers all, I might take a look at the other options as well.
EduTech Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Yup TeamViewer ticked all the boxes for me when i wanted to do this James.
peterdoherty Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 big thumbs up for teamviewer - saved me a lot of miles over the past while!
ZeroHour Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 For my mates all I do is use windows messenger, it has remote support stuff built in. He just sends you the request on msn and it will try to connect (can take up to 2 mins) but it mostly works.
sparkeh Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) EDIT: oops removed after a good point by @RabbieBurns Edited April 19, 2013 by sparkeh
RabbieBurns Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Eh? All the options above are free and work great. Is this naughty advertising? quoting them just preserves their spam long after it has been reported and deleted ;p
chazzy2501 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) Did you try the already built in Windows Remote Assistant. It really works msra.exe EDIT: Doh! This post is 4 years old...Hope he wasn't waiting. Edited April 19, 2013 by chazzy2501
LeMarchand Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Spooky! Was just looking in to this as RDP is currently not an option at all my schools- and this thread rises from its grave. Now that it's shuffling around: is Teamviewer definitely free for EDU use? Has anyone used Chrome Remote Desktop and can compare?
sparkeh Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 is Teamviewer definitely free for EDU use? Well the EULA doesn't seem to say it is Teamviewer EULA Private Use of TeamViewer: if your use of the Software is for your private use, you may install the Software on private computers to be used in any one session at any one time; Private Use is use of TeamViewer for purposes that are of no commercial nature and for which you are neither directly nor indirectly paid (for more information see TeamViewer - Free Remote Control, Remote Access & Online Meetings 569877) That link says: [h=3]How exactly is "private use" defined?[/h]As private use we understand any use of TeamViewer for purposes that are neither directly nor indirectly paid. It is not about whether the service itself is paid but whether the service is rendered within the context of the creation of an added value with some kind of financial compensation. Examples for an indirect payment: a software company sells a software product for which it offers free support via TeamViewer teamwork among colleagues within a company use in associations and non-profit organizations with non-volunteer (i.e. paid) employees access to a company computer for work-related activities In the above mentioned cases TeamViewer is used for creating an added value, the payment takes place indirectly through salaries or a combination of sales/support activities. In any case, a use of TeamViewer with family and friends without any financial compensation is considered private use. 1
LeMarchand Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I had my suspicions that the LEA were telling me porkies (or hadn't bothered to check). *Goes to uninstall* Oh well! Anyone used Chrome Remote Desktop, then?
LeMarchand Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Anyone used Chrome Remote Desktop, then? Well, I tried to use it but without changing a load of the school's settings or creating a private account (to enable access to the web store) can't get past installing Chrome on my laptop. May need to rethink! (Or accept that Google will eventually get their claws into my soul).
