Supply teachers - again

There's a two year old thread about this subject, which I've read but I need a bit more opinion please.

 

As suggested in the old thread, I'd like to set up a series of Supply-01, Supply-02 etc users. This appears to be a good idea to stop Supply teachers from logging in as the teacher they are covering. I have found that the absent teacher leaves their log in details in the plans written for the Supply - which for obvious reasons is not ideal.

 

My question then is - what permissions and access do you give to the Supply users? We are a Junior School and do not have electronic registration (yet) so no need for Sims which I'm guessing would be horrendous anyway, but do you restrict access to certain places or not? I'm thinking of a locked down desktop and start menu, anything else I should lock down?

We have 3 supply supervisors here and they have their own accounts with teacher rights but we also have a generic 'visitor' account which is (only slightly) locked down.

 

They have to do similar things to 'real' teachers so we need to give them similar rights including SIMS (which is more locked down than the usual teacher accounts).

We have a generic teacher account that the cover people use. I have to say that it is exactly the same as the other accounts - in a primary school there is little that they could do to cause problems as we too have no SIMS or anything else

For short term supplies i would suggest just doing the general accounts like you have suggested (supply 1, supply 2) and just give them a standard student account. if and when you do electronic reg just give them a paper print out of the class and get them to give it to the office admin staff or HoD for that subject.

 

For long term or common supply staff (eg: ones that you have all the time) I would just give them standard teacher accounts and teach them how to do the electronic registration.

Why would a supply need to access SIMS? And even if they did, wouldn't they go through their line manager or through the bursar to access?

Generic teacher/visitor account is all that is needed, they are there to teach lessons not be involved in the financial system?

Those of us who use electronic registration need to get the class registered and to do that you need access to SIMS (or your prefered MIS). Paper registers going to the office are frowned upon here and should only be used as a last resort.

 

All our supply tend to be regulars or ex-staff and know the system, if not they're given training on how to do it.

 

As mentioned the supply version of SIMS is locked down.

One of my primaries is starting electronic registration in September.

 

I was thinking of creating a supply account for each class with SIMS permissions just to take the register.

Or perhaps just give them paper copies. Not sure yet.

Thanks for the thoughts folks, much appreciated. I think I'll create some standard "teacher" users now and deal with Sims later.
