Dos_Box Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 This cute little chap appeared in our neighbours garden over the weekend, and I was rather chuffed to see it as the last time I saw one was over 20 years ago! Can anyone guess what it is?

They spend a lot of time in the top of trees and deep in hedgerows which is why you don't see them very often. I did see one of their caterpillars last year though for the first time. Dos_Box Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Hummingbird Moth? The Hummingbird Hawkmoth is rather rarer, as it is migratory, but I've seen more of them (particularly in the past few years) than I have of the Elephant Hawk Moth. They like the lavender in our garden.

It was bright green, longer than my index finger and good and chubby - it looked like the kind of thing Ray Mears could dig out of a rotting log in Africa and make a whole meal out of. It also squeaked when we poked it, which made me and my sister jump somewhat. -- David Hicks
