djh Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hi, We are currently running backup exec with 9 windows servers and 1 mac server. I have setup the remote agent on the mac server using the script and all looks fine, I can browse the server and the crednetials are all working fine. however every morning i come in and the backup is still running. AT 3MB/second! Can anyone shed any light on why this is so slow? One thing worth mentioning is that the mac server doesn't appear under macinstosh resources, I have to browse for it manually within the domain list. Many Thanks, Dan
ZeroHour Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Does this only affect the mac servers backup? What are you backing up to?
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Symantec provide their own drivers for tape drives on windows servers. These have increased the speed of the backup in my experience. Maybe there is some symantec driver thing for the MAC.

In the Tools menu you can install Symantec Drivers for your tape device. Don't forget to reboot
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Hi guys, It's just backing up to the disc at the moment, the full backup tonight will go to tape but haven't tried that yet. It's literally backing up from the mac hdd to the backup srv hdd. Thanks,
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 You could sniff the network traffic between the mac and the server to make sure that you are not getting lots of corrupted packets and retransmissions ?

It's literally backing up from the mac hdd to the backup srv hdd. Thanks, Sounds like a network issue. Try copying a file between the two servers, if the speed is slow then check your switches and cables. Perhaps you have a switch port with a lot of collisions or crc errors. try this from the backupexec server: ping macserveripaddress -t -l 2000 do you get packet loss?
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Ran the ping with 2000 bytes, and it says request timed out, and then it wont even ping, yet I can ping from the mac server to the backup server, weird. Any ideas? I'm fairly new to all this, the network engineer has gone traveling for 2 months so i'm left holding the fort. Dan
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Ah OK, if i ping ks-macsrv i get a response, and it resolves the IP address, but if I ping the ip address it does request timed out....

If they are try using different ports and swapping network cables. If you the servers are on different switches then I would test connecting the servers to the same switch to eliminate any inter-switch communication issues. Getting late here, but the key to this problem is to get the pings working in both directions. Once you get the network issue sorted, BackupExec should work fine. Hope that helps.
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Can you paste the result of ipconfig /all from the windows server enter this into the command line and The result of ifconfig on the mac Enter this into a terminal Also I guess ifconfig will work on the mac as its Unix based if not anyone got a better idea ? djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Hi, OK have got it all pinging each other, and no packets are lost and everything is under 1ms so it's all working fine, but the speed will still not get beyond 3.00mb/sec. Infact now it's gone down to 2.00meg. Dan

Infact now it's gone down to 2.00meg. Dan Are you talking about Megabytes per second, or megabits per second there?
spc-rocket Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 MB, mega bytes. Doesn' Backupexec display this in MB/min (i.e. megabytes per minute)? Ash.
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 nope it's definately displaying 3mb/sec. the point is that all other windows backups are runnign at around 980MB/sec. Dan
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 980MB per second ! thats extremely fast do you have 10gb connectivity ?
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 The full and diff windows backups range between around 500 - 1700 MB/Sec (which i assume is mega byte), and then the transfer to tape is around 3300 MB/sec. I'm pulling my hair out over this now, 3MB/sec is ridiculous!!!
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I think you are getting the speeds wrong to be honest "The full and diff windows backups range between around 500 - 1700 MB/Sec (which i assume is mega byte), and then the transfer to tape is around 3300 MB/sec. I'm pulling my hair out over this now, 3MB/sec is ridiculous!!! " A gigabit network link will transfer something like 80 megabytes a second at peak if the data can be supplied into it and recieved from it at that speed. If the data being entered is lots of small files like images, cookies etc this will SIGNIFICANTLY slow the transfer rate down where as if you are transfering .ISO files or movies (anything thats 1 large file) the transfer speed is much higer. if are are transfering 500megabytes a second then you must have 3 things 1 Extemely faster networking being the cable the switch and the network cards in the servers. This would need to be 10Gigabit ethernet to allow you to even get close to 1700 Megabyte speeds. although you might do 500 megabyte. You would also need a very fast disk arrangement in the servers sending and recieving the data to beable to send and right the data at that speed. Both of these things I doubt a school on a education bugdet could afford. I would suggest that you are getting MegaByte and MegaBit confused or that the method of measureing is having some kind of problem.
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 what an idiot..... the column under transfer rate was sqaushed so it only displayed the number. it's per minute not per second!!! I had to think about that then. Any more ideas on the mac backup guys? I think i might get my manager to buy some support from symantec....
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 how are you measuring the transfer speed ? via symantec
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 yeah, in the job history at the bottom theres a 'job rate' column.
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Ok so its transfering 3 megabytes per minuite to the sysmantec ? have you tested the speed of just copying a normal file to and from the mac to get a comparison ? also do you have antivirus software checking the files on the way in and out of the server that can also have a large impact
djh Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Hi soapyfish, I have tried transfering files both to and from the mac and the backup srv. They are both copying way quicker than 3.0mb /min, it copied a 40mb file in less than a minute! We have sophos installed on both server but it doesn't look like thats scanning anything. Dan
soapyfish Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hi Dan, have to looked at the symantec knowledge base for related issues and is the backup exec up to date patch wise ? are you using some Mac software called time machine ? also this thread maybe provide some insight time machine slow initial backup - fix [Archive] - Mac Forums
