We are running 5 workstations using Windows 7 RC on the network all with SIMS.Net installed. Standard install just need to copy the Connect.ini over. Works without any problems. Windows 7 RC also works fine on Windows 2003 network, all programs that were previously installed on XP and Vista work fine. When running XP mode need to ensure workstations have Dual core capable of enabling virtual performance in Bios. Just sits inside Windows 7 as another OS and needs to be kept updated.

Best option is just to dual boot with your main OS, easiest way to gain experience and knowledge on a new OS that is due for release in a few months.

You're not seriously suggesting that Microsoft TEST their products, are you?

 

I reckon they all stand around a machine while it's compiling with their fingers crossed and ship it out the door as quick as they can :D

No, make it stable send it out as a preview beta, then add some new function\security fix at the last moment without testing it and then put in the marketplace with a £££ tag

Have you tried the System manager tool ?

(I haven't looked for/tried a fix yet.)

 

Also rather nervous of any of the other Windows 3 style programs hiding behind Pulsar !

 

(As an aside, the test PC doesn't have hardware virtualisation (E7200) so it can't use XP Mode but VirtualBox runs fine on it.)

Basically any v.4 (delphi programs) - System Manager, FMS, Exams, Nova-T will have trouble in x64\windows 7 etc. I believe there are fixes, but really it's a question of them being re-written in .net.

 

By the time Windows 7 is supported, System Manager 7 should be out, the rest should be underway - or at least on the roadmap ;).

@TimH - I vaguely remember that netui2.dll error from when I first started using Vista. There is a fix, but I can't remember what I did (possibly just copy the file from an XP PC?!).

 

I don't use the Simsload thing on either Vista on Win7, I just use a shortcut straight to the pulsar.exe file - since it is only my computer affected (at the moment), I don't mind manually updating when needed.

That's pretty much right, there's a solution on the Capita supportnet, which tells you to download zip file and where to put the file.

I've had a look on the Capita support site but I can't find the fix for this. Has anyone got it?

That fix only works on Vista, not on Windows 7. I think they're fixing it a different way for Windows 7.

True, but that is the whole point of Beta testing and early release to IT professionals. I think it's extremely lazy of Capita not to look forward to ensuring their product works with Windows 7. However, it is Capita. Very poor software developers if you ask me!

Yes but you can't really reliably test and develop for an OS in beta, microsoft could have potentially made a number of substantial changes to the OS before release if they felt like it. Yes its probably prudent for them to have done some limited testing but you cant divert resources to a project when you cant guarentee the scope.

This is relatively mundane *userland* code though, I don't really see much scope for MS throwing major spanners at it prior to release... especially if you're writing your code to run on both the current and future platforms i.e. not going crazy using Win7 only features.

 

And given the current "churn" rate i.e. turnover of OS versions, SQLs, Offices, dotNets and SPs and patches I don't see how you can successfully run a non-trivial s/w project without committing resources to and paying serious attention to the betas and RCs.

 

I suspect it's simply cultural - XP SP3 wasn't that different from a fully patched XP SP2 and IIRC it took at least 6 months, that is far too long, for them to say it was officially supported.

This doesnt really change the fact that the OS is not even at general release yet, i dont even think the major software titles like CS4 officially support windows 7 yet. Everyone is getting a little ahead of themselves i think, this suddern rush by a number of sites to start deploying it isnt something Capita was likely to expect given that it probably wont be croping up in business's for little a while yet.

Full release of Window 7.0 now out. There are problems with SIMS on it (particularly with FMS). Working on it now!

Still progressing with early release of Windows 7.0; huge improvement on Vista - but some problems in SIMS that we must fix, doing now!

Many don't use SupportNet or Twitter or LinkedIn, so is it any wonder that such posts appear here ........?
