featured_spectre Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Just spent an hour on the phone with Capita SIMS, and it seems like they will let you use windows 7 for SIMS, but (And I quote the managers own words here) "We are refusing to support it for atleast 9 months-12 months until we have worked out some of the bugs or until a service pack is release for windows 7". thats just not the info I wanted to hear!!
DrCheese Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 It's pretty lazy of them considering that 7 isn't all that different than Vista at it's core. Plus it's not as if MS have been wildly changing the product with each beta, so they don't have that excuse either, given that it's been the same thing for the past 6/7 months
DrCheese Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Be fair, its not even on sale yet! no! But seriously tho, 9 to 12 months is pretty bad considering they've had ages to test it on a near final platform.
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME YOUR NOT USING WINDOWS 7 IN THE LIVE ENVIRONMENT? Come on, no one installs the OS straight away, all the virus coders releases there work on release day.
DrCheese Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 of course not, anyone that crazy needs a slap. We do however have it on our work laptops
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 So then why do you need support? Surely your clever enough to get the client working
Gatt Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Capita: Which OS you using to run SIMS? NM/Tech: err... Windows XP (to self: virtual mode inside Windows 7 )
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 NM/Tech: err... Windows XP (to self: virtual mode inside Windows 7 ) I heard the virtual mode was rather messy (ie doesn't work well)... anyone want to counter the statement?
EduTech Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I have used windows xp mode on windows 7, i think it works rather wel.. i have managed to get IE etc published using it. I am tempting to try and publish SIMS but just have not round to it yet
cookie_monster Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I've read that XP mode works very well you just need a decent spec system and to give the VM more than the default 256Mb RAM. I'm running the RC on my work desktop and it's been spot on. It's been finished for ages MS have spent alot of time making sure Vista SP3...err I mean Windows 7 is exactly right. I think Capita will see pretty quickly that SIMS works just fine on Windows 7 (trust me it does ), but they'll still probably take 9 months to give it the nod.

Batman Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Sims worked fine for me on Windows 7 without enabling any compatibility. You have to join the domain, then you run the simsinst.exe as normal... did have to copy the connect.ini over, it wouldn't use it from the mapped drive like XP did. We've given it to one teacher to try out but I don't think we'll be using Windows 7 for a long long time yet.
EduTech Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 We'll be worried if IE didn't work! Well i was just quoting what you said in brackets hehe
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Well i was just quoting what you said in brackets hehe I like Cheese Just for you EduTech
mrforgetful Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 XP Mode will only work on computers which have hardware virtualization on their processors. None of ours do here, including our newest with Core2Duo E7400 ones.
featured_spectre Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 well we want to push it out to the live environment as we have had a few select machines dual booting. Dont get me wrong, we have installed SIMS and it works fine, but I mean 9-12 months to just support it is a bit stupid! and we intend on pushing out Windows 7 across the school for christmas. (not my choice, but the headteachers/governors!)
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 @mrforgetful Turn on VT in the bios @nephilim Hope you have WSUS

mrforgetful Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 @mrforgetful Turn on VT in the bios @nephilim Hope you have WSUS I know you have to for processors that support it, these don't support it at all. Oh man WSUS, caused nothing but problems here.
mrforgetful Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Bottom of page. Some do, some don't. Intel® Core?2 Duo Processor E7400 (3M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) with SPEC Code(s) SLB9Y, SLGW3
matt40k Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I know you have to for processors that support it, these don't support it at all. Oh man WSUS, caused nothing but problems here. Sucks if it doesn't support VT. Really? How the hell do you intend to keep them up-to-date? Are you going to become deeply regiously?
featured_spectre Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 do have WSUS but it has caused havok in the past....
mrforgetful Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Sucks if it doesn't support VT. Really? How the hell do you intend to keep them up-to-date? Are you going to become deeply regiously? To be honest right now we don't really. Don't suffer any issues. When WSUS was running it rolled out a patch that stopped them all logging in and it was one of those which didn't have the 'remove' option. Had to uninstall it from 500 computers by hand. Also slowed the network down quite a bit too. Will probably take another look nearer October and when we have Server 2008.

Had to uninstall it from 500 computers by hand Did you not split the clients into groups and try it on say 30 for a few days, I always try to avoid rolling out a patch to all clients at once for exactly that reason.
