The numbering makes sense if you look at the "professional" versions of Windows; 1, 2 and 3 were only "professional" (no real home users).

NT started at 3.1; it was roughly the same time as Windows 3.1 and was followed by 3.5 and 4.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP had internal version numbers of 5.0 and 5.1 and then Vista was internally version 6 so it makes sense (sort of!) that the next number is 7

Of course it's not that easy (for some value of easy!) - to make sure some crap software doesn't break, I think Windows 7 returns 6 as its major version number.

See, completely obvious numbering for Windows as long as you leave out all the complicated bits :-)

From a system builders point of view its going to be interesting to see what the pricing is going to be and the impact that it has on PC prices.

oOoOoOo The PCs I've ordered today are eligable :D yay :D (not that I'm that fussed as I'm covered under the school agreement anyway but you know :) )

I have my new Desktop for work coming sometime this week, now it appears to be eligable for the upgrade, which is great news!

One thing that really irritates me, is the BitLocker does not come with the Proffesional Version (which i will be able to upgrade to from Vista Business), and i think most companys/schools would purchase the Proffesional version so we will end up using 3rd party software which is a pain! as i personally think they have improved BitLocker in Windows 7 and think it would be great asset to our machines.

Owell! :(

We'll be lucky there as we have Software Assurance, allowing us to have Windows 7 Enterprise which, IIRC, is pretty much the same as Ultimate but with a VL key!
