Example might be a D-Link mini-GBIC in a Netgear switch? Just wondered if anyone has tried this? Thoughts on a postcard please..

At least that was what I was told with the HP stuff. I aint gonna risk it either.
plexer Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 It depends if the switch manfacturer has included anything in the switches firmware to check the gbic. Some non HP gig bics can be used in hp switches but there is allways the risk they could be blacklisted in a future firmware update. Ben 1
teejay Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 They are 'meant' to be interoperable, but as has been said before some switch manufacturers will blacklist other makes, claiming that it is to prevent counterfeit GBICS. HP are real barstewards with this, even blacklisting some of their earlier revisions of GBIC modules.

Well it’s the D-Link mini-GBIC’s we have at the moment but looking to upgrade the switch but reuse the modules. The switch where looking at will be a Netgear and to not have to get modules again would be a real help considering we won’t be gaining in speed at all the core switch features were after.

alextreadwell Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I have used different brands of gbics in net gear switchs there are a few things to look out for main thing is voltage of the gbics there are 2 different voltages that they work at, can't remember the different values but I checked in the switch manuals before i tried them. The second is the manufacturer they all tend to be made by 2 or three manufacturers finisar being the one I tend to use and have worked with almost every switch I have tried them in but reselling companies put there own brand on them so its hard to tell who has made them. Linksys seem to work well ( with netgear, planet, levelone and 3com. The only switch manufacturer I have had problems with is the newer hp switches which will only use there own Gbics. Gbic is suppost to be a standard interface but has its revisons like USB but manufactures don't always stick to the spec. 1

We bought GBICS for an HP switch and despite us asking for official HP ones the company in question sent us generic unbranded modules. These fitted OK, looked identical and were the same model #, but the HP switch objected to the fact they weren't 'official' HP modules!!!!!
klawd Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) We are using a combination of HP and 3Com GBICS in a 3com 4200G, and 3COM GBIC in Allied Telesis switch Some 3COM gbics in a HP 1800G switch, and 3COM gbic in a DLINK POE switch. Allied Telesyn GBIC in Netgear FSM switch. All work no problem. Edited June 25, 2009 by klawd 1

SYNACK Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Yeap, if they are modules that support the generic interface they will work with all switches that support them, the D-Link ones that we have also support operation as generic but as people have said before hp are right prats in this department requireing their own branded ones. In saying that the hp ones do have a lifetime warrenty which is really nice. As it is a standard spec no damage will be caused by putting generic modules in to test them. It is up to the switch firmware as to use or block them. 1

This is where sometimes the respect for HP is lost in my opinion. Ash.
Oops_my_bad Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I've had GBICs that are intended for FC SANS running in our netgears (SFP GBICS mind..) of different manufacturers too - proco(?), agilent, to name a few... Don't bother with HPs though (funny how the HP queens always go quiet on the old GBIC interoperability threads) 1
