tmbenson Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Ok, after a long debate much earlier in the forum i thought i would share my final thought, after trying to find the perfect linux distro, i have finally come to a desision. Linux mint for me is outright the best, in my opinion of course. It has the nice simplicity of a windows desktop with the "trying to be a windows replacement distro" So it still has the beautiful polished feel of a wonderful GNOME distro. I think its fab! so anyone wondering what distro to choose, leave the "buntu's" and get on mint! Tom
webman Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 I use Mint too (albeit the Xfce community edition) - very good distro. But I don't think there is one "best" OS out of them all - it's all down to personal choice and what works best for you depending on what your personal requirements are
tmbenson Posted June 12, 2009 Author Posted June 12, 2009 Now personally i didnt like PCLOS, i tried it, and yes its hardware support was nice, but software wise i just cant stand the way KDE works. It just felt like it was incomplete or rusty in some way, but yes each to thier own!

Batman Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 I think Debian is the best. All distros are based on either Debian or Slackware. All the best distros are based on Debian. I use Ubuntu for desktop but I always use Debian for servers.

localzuk Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Bah, you're all wrong!!! The best distro is definitely Mandriva! (Joke!) I'm an Ubuntu guy myself, simply because It Just Works and i'm used to the layout now with it. I don't particularly choose Gnome or KDE myself, much prefer Fluxbox or E16.

There's something I like about the distro that others distros just don't have. I just don't know what that something is. Also, GoboLinux is worth a look see. It's so secure and versatile; you can use it for anything from desktop use to even more desktop use. And the 4Gb address limit... that's awesome, absolute genius. Who needs memory anyway? I still have 256Mb in my XP machine. It's great - teaches me patience. System restore is also great for teaching patience as it rations your system resources by keeping them to itself... very considerate thing to include too, as we know all good operating systems will inevitably screw up catastrophically. I love the way it helps you to almost fix the problem. XP is also awesome because without it I don't think we'd all have jobs... and that one I'm serious about.
mikeglover Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I'd say that the Best OS would either be Linux or MacOSX (yeah yeah I know its BSD underneath) The popularity and development of Linux has exploded over the last 10 years or so. I remember when I first tried out a linux distro (i think it was an early Mandrake or SuSE) at the time it was not a desktop replacement to windows, no firefox, no openoffice. But now with the likes of Ubuntu bringing together great Open Source Apps like Firefox, Openoffice and GIMP into an easy to use and polished distro. I think that MacOS X has been successful because Apple have control over both the hardware and software, aswell its the most pleasant OS to look at. Going back to the question itself. What's the Best OS? There's just no definitive answer. I think it depends on: What you want your computer to do? The software. Well, that's my two cents

Midget Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I say windows 7 *uses debian server and mint desktop to hide from flying eggs.* incidently I have a DAMP. Dragonfly BSD Apache MySQL PHP server. Seriously not recommended unless you like being frustrated during config. At least it's secure.
