I don't like this one bit the service doesn't actually look that bad but I resent being "opted in" and my details being sold in the first place. I'd like to be able to find out who "sold" my closly guarded number.

Hmm, opt-out is available by texting a shortcode, but there's no indication of charges for this. Presumably £1/text

You can become ex-directory by texting the letter ‘E’ to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory or you can call us on 0800 138 6263. Standard network charges apply. The first time 118 800 contacts you you will be sent an SMS reminding you about how to become ex-directory. Please allow up to 4 weeks for your ex-directory request to take effect.

 

From their website. Looks like they're not charging anything extra to remove people from the directory, which is something.

I remember being asked years ago by orange when I first got my PAYG Phone if I wanted my number to be in a mobile phone book if one became avalable so probably a question you were asked years ago

I am in their database, and I'm always very careful about making sure I tell companies not to pass my details on, so either they're harvesting numbers some other way or some companies I deal with are being less than honest. Could explain why they're so coy about the sources of their numbers.

If you check the FAQs, you can become exdirectory by ringing a free 0800 number.

 

Also they don't actually give your number to the person who is looking for you. Instead they text you asking you to get in touch with the person who has contacted them (does that make sense?).

I think it takes 4 weeks for them to remove your details from receipt of the request.

My thoughts entirely. My land-line is ex-directory, not because I want to prevent everyone from calling me, but that I want to prevent cold-callers from calling me. If there was a way of being in the phone book without having your details sold on, I would take it.

My feeling is that if I have taken the time to register with the Telephone Preference Service, then my details should not be on this.

 

Fortunately, it appears that I, and the rest of my family, do not appear!

@ NickJones; I can agree with you as I said it looks quite well implimented I just don't like having to opt out of the service.

I also have a feeling that the only way they could of got my number would be through one of them damn web forms that automatically re-ticks the opt out box when you need to change a detail on the form.

When did this start because I've received about 10 cold calls on my private mobile these past 2 weeks and previously I had none at all. I'm TPS registered too.

It's not due to start for another 10 - 14 days so just think what it will be like then!

 

I just saw on the news that this is almost certainly against the Data Protection Act. The interviewee said that he had been in touch with someone at the DP Office who had confirmed this. I hope that this gets stopped now, before it goes live. If not, I'll wait for a number of unexpected and unwelcome calls, report it to the police and get my number changed free of charge. If a large number of people do that, I guess something will be done about this company.

Well, I've gone from zero cold-calls to four in the last two days. Where do I go to find out if these muppets have my number? I couldn't see a link on their webshite.

Just think.. wouldnt it be better if all those anti-BNP protestors did something worthwhile and expended their thug efforts on the fraudsters behind this scheme rather than those who were democratically elected!?

At the moment their phone line doesn't provide the mobile service, but they're planning to add it.
