I've been offered a new job outside of school that I was interviewed for last week.

 

I'm speechless... gobsmacked... shocked.

 

I didn't interview well, felt that the techie questions were targeted way above the level of requirements, and yet today I was told that I scored highest in the techie questions and that they will offer me one of two jobs as a result.

 

Add to this that I'm practically promised back to my old school, and I'm in a real pickle.. what *do* I do? Do I stick with education, or do I return to industry?

You really have to decide for yourself which job you will enjoy the best. It's not about the money (although it helps) but if you're not happy it's not worth it. You should also take into consideration what you are best at out of the two.

Thats is only negative effect in industry suport people dont touch server side and server side dont touch support side?

@ russ - I'm thinking support side - as it's what I seem well-versed in now. The beauty of this position is that in 2 years if I hate support, I can move anywhere in the organisation - to development, server stuff... I can even use it to lever myself out of IT if I wanted to... (not that I would).

Go with the one you feel most comfortable with - but I have to say that the FCO one would probably have better long term prospects.

 

I've known people who work there in one form or another and they love it.

If i were you i would get a peice of paper and list the pro's and con's of both jobs. What you like doing, dislike doing and what may be new and different in each role.

 

The job with the most positive aspects should (i hope) be the one for you.

pity you can't have a mix of the two, A sounds an interesting job, but they're not using Proper Mailservers, whereas B hints at travel to exotic locations.

They have a site just outside MK in the middle of the countryside as well as their large presence in London.

 

Tis very much like my days at HSBC where we worked in tellytubbyland [Google Earth S75 3DJ - you can't see it very well, but there are large green pipes sticking up out of the ground and there were rabbits on the landscaped grass!].

 

Fortunately for me, it's very close to where I live and means that I will be able to get there within 20 minutes of a morning. I shall become an expert at dodging pheasants on the backroads though!

Congrats IG, I am sure which / what ever you choose you will enjoy it, I must admit I love the fact I am so close to work, makes me think twice bout changing jobs, do i really want say a 1hr commute to work instead of 20 mins, but do whats best for you, your future and family.

To be fair however, I've been to Liverpool a few times (to see friends) and found it to be a top place with the friendliest people I've ever met! Its a Capital of Culture and all that too! (Is that enough to escape being hunted down!?) :twisted:
