Who fault is it?

We've had a problem with kids searching for Doctors and Nurses in Google Images, and it coming up with naughty things *giggles like a six year old*

I have been reading through previous posts so I'm not going to be asking about how to stop this blah blah blah

 

But, if for some reason censored images do make it through the filter when searching for something innocent. Is it really our fault?

After all, they are search the internet.. some 4 exabytes worth or something to that effect. Are they suprised that 2 out of 3098433 files with the name Doctors and Nurses "doing it" have come through the filter?

Or is it genuinely our fault?

 

On another question, has anyone used a code for putting a Safe Search Google Images Bar on an intranet page and blocking the normal Google Images?

I've seen them out there but none of them have worked when I try it.

which filtering solution are you using? I know smoothwall, etc have an option to force safesearch - even then not everything will be safe....

I think also you can do it in profile? Change the default setting to enforce safesearch and then block the options change to stop users lowering the safe search option. As Domino says, you'll not make everything safe.

 

You could try picsearch.com as an alternative to google as it is supposed to be designed for children. However this still shows up some interesting results sometimes.

 

Just check/update your AUP to see if it states that you cannot be held responsibile, but will do everything you can to ensure that nothing inappropriate gets through.

Using Websense.

 

I just remember haing a conversation when on a course with some technicians, and how parents have complained that innocent little Jimmy has seen boobies instead of a Roman Jug in history.

 

Even with forced safe search stuff gets though, so how can it be our fault?

Our LEA blocks all access to Google Images

there's only so much you can do - we have Bloxx, PolicyCentral Enterprise and Netsupport, safesearch forced etc.

 

Still got a kid in last year who found an image of Shrek getting head in google safesearch (looking for cartoon characters).

 

Not really that much we could do short of informing Google about it.

I don't do the whole deal with websense, network tech does all that.

we ban google images outright, job done.

 

99% of the time it takes a kid to put a single female name in and you'll get p*rn back

You can block certain words that pupils use. But ultimately you cant block everything bad. I have been through phazes of outright blocking of google images to very slack filtering, none of which was decided by me(LEA filtering & requests from the school staff)It comes down to education, yes little johny may see boobies, but they can do that in the paper.

 

The best you can hope for is to highlight the ones who are searching for porn specifically. The school does its best to protect, but if they really want to find things chances are they will. Just ensure your AUP is up to date, so that you have covered your back and peolpe know you will do all you can to ensure pupils are protected, but no solution is perfect.

If you want to allow google images (which *can* be a useful tool), you really do need to throw everything plus kitchen sink at it...

We suggest:

* force safesearch

* deep URL filtering (blocks thumbnails from blocked sites even though served from google servers)

* search term filtering (we're allowing admins to block their own custom lists real soon now)

* hefty backside kicking for those deliberately inciting others to search for dodgy images

Dont you mean that it's our fault for creating copyright in the first place and them telling people that they shouldn't be copying stuff? It always seems that people think I'm making these things up when I tell them about the DPA, copyright etc:rolleyes:

It is a mulit trillion pound / dollar / euro industry and at the end of the day we need to teach people to become responcible citizens as well as doing our bit.

 

when little johnny goes home and daddy has taken off the safe search in search of some "happy time" then will the world end!!!!!!!!. No I Blame the parents Set limits for your kids, teach them right from wrong and let them make their own mistakes and experience the big bad world because one day the "techie" will not be there to save them or to blame for your childs exposure to tinterwebs.

Staff in school sometimes forget the Internet is not a playground designed for children....

 

I try to persuade staff to direct students to use Picsearch - Image Search for pictures and images
