Is it worth it??

Im looking to get a new tv, 32" or 37". I have seen some for around £350 with a resolution of 1366 x 768 or some for about £500 that are full 1080p.

 

At the moment i have no HD sources but i will eventually be getting a PS3 and sky HD over the next year.

 

Do people think the extra £150 is worth it for the increace in resolution??

I still can't see the difference between my 42" Plasma non-HD and my Dad's 50" Full HD Screen when comparing films like Transformers etc.

 

But.... If it makes it that bit more future proof then I'd probably say Yes.

Get an eye test, if you have perfect vision it might be worth getting the HD version.

 

Generally 40" is the point at which you start noticing a clear difference between the two.

Being the owner of a mere 720p LCD, i would definately say that 1080i is a big improvement. I am so jealous every time I see good full HD sources on one. If you can afford £150 then go for it. You'll only kick yourself if you don't.

I agree with JamesB you wont see much, if any difference in that size television.... I would advise that you save some more money and get a 42" or larger you know it makes sense

You gets what you pay for with these things. I ended up going for the higher end ones, just purely to get the better picture quality even on standard TV resolutions.

One thing to be careful of, 32 & 37" look small in the shops, but get the dimensions and see how big it is in your home. A 37" in a normal size room is pretty big!

Hm its difficult as it can be quite subjective, if you sit right in front of the screen you may notice more of a difference between 720p & 1080p. Some 1080p screens also have an internal conversion from 1080p > 1080i > 1080p eaning you loose some quality. I would sooner go with a decent 720p set over a budget 1080p set.

Lol yeah I made that mistake when I tried to put a 37" in my bedroom to replace an ageing 21" tv. The faffing tv stand wasn't big enough and the whole thing stuck out too far. Couldn't hang it on the wall as they're made of cardboard. Wife wanted me to take it back to the shop but I now use it as a screen on my pc....

Hmm, dont think my room would be big enough for a 42" screen that might be a bit of over kill!

 

Am i right in summing this up as: There is not a massive differance between a good 32" set at the lower res to a budget 32" set with full 1080p. BUT...If you want to totaly enjoy the viewing experiance and future proof go for a good 37" with full 1080p.

You will notice a difference between 720 and 1080 even on a 32" as thats what I went for and I can definitely see a difference. Yes its not as noticeable as on a bigger screen, but in my size living room a 32" looks plenty big enough and I certainly wouldn't want anything bigger.

What you've got to remember as well is that most of the time you won't be watching in HD unless you have HD TV thorugh Sky/Freesat etc or just use it to watch Blu Rays, so you really want to look at how good the picture quality is in normal definition.

I would say that 37 or 40 is about right for an average living room. You will not really notice the extra 1080p on normal tv but will on dvd/bluray/ps3/xbox360.

 

I work at sainsburys part time as well on the electrical section and spend all day advising about what tele is the best buy etc. There is currently a 37" Panasonic viera plasma that is 1080p for £399 i think it is. Its a bargain!!!

If you are buying sky hd and a ps3 later in the year then surely go for the full HD. You'll absolutely hate yourself for spending that much anyway on less technology. Especially if you see another TV when you recieve yours cheaper and better in a years time, nothing worse.

 

I'm glad i went for the 1080i version because although it isnt full HD, it's certainly worth getting the best you can for what you can afford, HD is here to stay and its well worth keeping up.
