This is going to sound rather obvious when I ask but it was something that cropped up as a result of a visit to hospital yesterday evening with my wife.

We were concerned about a possible eptopic pregnancy after a sustained period of cramps and one sided pain, so she was given all the usual tests for blood pressure, temp and they did a pregnancy test at the same time.

Now bear in mind we're talking about a month since the last period, so when the doctor (in a very round about way) informed us of our impending parenthood, we figure we're 2 to 3 weeks in at most.

Anyway, here's the question...

At what point is it best to tell people that they're about to become grandparents, very broody, start bugging their other halves about babies, etc... ? (ie: share the news)

I ask because right now it feels like we're about ready to burst into song but are very aware that nature, being what it is, may intervene and put us back to square one so's to speak..

So, when do you announce something like this... ??

Well I'm not a laidie... but being a very proud Dad on more than one occasion, I can say it's pretty usual for most people to try and wait 'till the 12 week point... having said that - grandparents to be seem to be pretty good at picking up on the signs!

Congrats to you both :baby:

Yeah, we couldn't wait to tell and blabbed all pretty much as soon as we knew to close friends and family - work and others we waited until the 12 weeks...

Ah... ok... well obviously I was using us as an example not to embarrass our "friends"... *ahem*..

Ok... well I suppose the next question has to be...

How the heck did you stop yourself blabbing?!!:D

Also not a lady, but I did ask my sister (who has a second on the way) what her advice was.

According to her then you should just tell people whenever you feel like it, though make sure both of you know whether/when you're announcing.

Throw a random party, that's always a gooden :-)

Then the all the people that matter will be there and you can be congratulated until your hands fall off :-)

Congratulations by the way, theres nothing like it :-)

You potentially already have - this is a public forum, after all, and indexed by Google on a (very) regular basis. Probably you could "accidently" get your parents to search for a well-crafted Google search string and away you go...

Well funny you should mention it... It's her 30th this weekend and she has a surprise party being organised by me. She thinks we're going out for a meal with some friends (because I've been cr*p at getting things organise - which she believes a little too readily!).

Anyway, we've realised that when she has to refuse alcohol "at the meal" ;) it'll give the game away...

Congratulations by the way, theres nothing like it :-)

Thanks... It's probably not as daft as it sounds when I say I'm trying not to count my chickens at this point.

You're right though.. I always heard it would be a real unique moment but it's far more. :D

Speaking as the partner of a lady who has had three of the little angels - we always waited until either about 12 weeks (recommended as past most of the 'danger' points) or after the first scan.

I'm sure all will go well. We found it quite fun hugging the info to ourselves for just a little while, in a sort of 'we know something you don't' sort of way!

Congratulations - your life will never be the same again - and you won't want it to be:D

I love how there are no women on this thread.

Unfortunately i'm havent got any littles one yet (one day!) but i think the usual is to tell people after the 12 week scan...

Yay you!

Congrats!! Yep normally after the 12 week scan - I did tell a couple of very close friends both times (I have two not so little tykes - 9 and 13) a little earlier than family, good excuse for an early wet the babys head, but they have to able to keep stum big time cos family will not forgive if they think they were not first to know. Hope they live close so you can invite them around to announce at the same time - otherwise who'd do you phone first  ??!!

Yes we kept to us for a while and then few weeks before first scan we told parents etc.

As for refusing drink like having to pick prawns out of a takeaway meal you mean...

Congratulations!!

Both my sister and sister-in-law are pregnant at the mo, the family knew pretty much as soon as they found out - Although I would say to reveal all after the 12 week scans, just to make sure every things fine..

Oh how very exciting...ooo babies!! Aren't they the cutest things!! :p

To save a long story that you'd not be interested in; my eldest niece and my daughter were born within a week of each other, in the same hospital. Telling my folks in the gap between my brother's "private telling the parents" and the "formal announcement" caused much confusion all around.

I don't remember actually waiting for any specific week, but it was a fair while ago...

:D I can imagine...

I'm definitely waiting to tell my sister in person though... Want to be there when she realises she's going to be an Aunty.. She's been banging on about it enough!! :hand: :p

Yeah... I guess the thing is that we've had friends who've tried for years and gotten nowhere and you sort of feel very wary of counting your chickens in case you jinx things...

Right.. gotta think of something else now.. like all the money I have to start saving.. erk...:doh::p

Well, here's a lady who has had some littlies joining in.(not so little now: boys both well over 6 ft and daughter 5ft 9!)

I would wait until 12 weeks or the first scan.

We rang the prospective grandparents at the same time so they couldn't say one knew before the other!

Congratulations though - you'll love it :D

Another for th 12 weeks - though with Daniel we had an early scan at 8 weeks and there was a heartbeat so we told a few people then..

Ok... 12 weeks it is... It's at times like this you realise that:

Yes it was good that the cramps and things are "normal" and now you know why her period hadn't come.

Wonderful that you now know that you've finally practiced unsafe sex successfully and you don't have to feel bad about it or worry about her Dad/Mum beating you up or hiding your body down some mine shaft... well, you hope!

Even good that you've proof at last that you weren't firing blanks after all and everything works as advertised... Can't help thinking that a simple test at a local clinic would have been cheaper, simpler and now you're thinking about "Coupling" and the three of them all in the room together!:D:D

Not so great that you somehow found yourself at the bottom of a very long ladder which is allegedly eight weeks long but right now sounds more like an eternity

... but to round it all off you find yourself with tears running down your face from laughing so hard at the post from Synack until the reality hits you clean between the eyes where it hurts...

Oh dear $deity.. what have I done!..

... and yet somehow, it's all good... Ain't life strange :)
