What are your experiences of the Learning Platform in Primary Schools?

 

I have searched the Internet and found very little information on how teachers are using it effectively. I am really enthusiastic and would like to share my enthusiasm with like minded teachers. I have just started a blog Primary Learning Platform on which I am going to post about my experience and would appreciate any comments or ideas.

 

I am also creating a list of Learning Platforms used by Local Authorities and whether they are used at Primary level, Secondary level or both. Either post below or leave a comment on my blog and I will update my list.

Not 100% sure how much of the following involves primary but here are some that I know at a LA level:

 

Ashford Rural Cluster (ARC) in Kent - RM Kaleidos

Kent (BSF Waves 3-4) - Fronter through Northgate

West Sussex - Moodle

East Sussex - Uniservity

Brighton and Hove - Uniservity

Medway - Uniservity

Hertfordshire - RM Kaleidos

Kent (General) - Kent Learning Zone (based on ScarePoint)

London Boroughs - Fronter through LGfL

 

That's all I can think of now.

Here we use RMs Kaleidos at all but one of our Secondary Schools, I can't remember what the other secondary is using but it could be Blackboard.

 

For our Primary Schools they currently use Netmedia but are in the final stages of selecting a new platform. The front runners are the new one from Netmedia (although not really finished yet to my knowledge) and Uniservity.

As part of a project I was running I looked at HoneyComb. I was considering whether to add them to a sharepoint structure. I'm aware that it can be put in to sharepoint.

 

I think its worth a look. You can even have a test account

Doncaster (South Yorkshire) is using Frog Teacher for both Primary and Secondary. Primary is not yet rolled out but Secondary is but how much its being used I don't know.

Cambridgeshire uses a bespoke version of Digitalbrain developed specifically for primary, initially to our own specification. We badge it as 'Starz' here, though other schools and authorities have their own We have been running it very successfully since 2005 and are due to launch version 2 in September, using technology which Digitalbrain have developed based on our and others' experiences

 

Over 90% of our schools use the system and, as the advisory service, the key for us to getting it used has been a combination of child-friendly tools and a lot of effort going in to providing or stimulating activities that schools and individual learners can take part in. We run something like 20 projects per term centrally, in addition to whatever schools do themselves.

We've just started using StudyWiz in Sheffield

yep studywiz in hampshire as well. Only just got it and seems great so far. Has different interfaces for primary and secondary.

The majority of Norfolk primaries (300+) use Netmedia, although there are a few using Frog in conjuction with a local secondary.

Brighton & Hove Authority are rolling out Uniservity to all Primaries/Secondaries - although most secondaries are already running with their own platforms (SharePoint, Frog, Fronter), so a bit of a mixed bag.

 

I would be interested in seeing your list when you have compiled it....

I would suggest trying Moodle for your primary school, gives you enough flexability without being tied to any contracts. I'd be willing to give you a hand in setting it up and passing on any information I have created into documents so far for our school.

Hi I am creating a VLE for a primary school for my final year dissertation at University, I was wondering if anyone would be kind of enough to give me some insight into what spec I should produce, I have knowledge of Learning Platforms within secondary schools, but not with primary schools so I was wondering if anyone could give me some useful pointers, any information on the design, layout, colour schemes, anything at all would be really useful, thank you.

SWGFL use net media, not sure how many schools have taken it up though. Wolverhampton seem to be doing good stuff (recent BECTA awards etc) and they use LP+ in primary.

Wolverhampton are the leaders for mobile and handheld computing. Certainly done a lot of good work in that field.

Peterborough (a unitary authority within Cambs) has gone for Kaleidos from RM. They already use Integris for MIS. Think it has been bought for all the secondary schools as well as the primaries, but not sure how widely it's been taken up although we've had it for about 2 years now (now on version 2). I think the schools may be due to pay for it themselves in next year or so, and then we will see who is happy with it and who's not.

I am a Year 5 teacher in a school in Kent in the Ashford Rural Cluster (ARC). We have supplied all our 19 schools with Kaleidos and are trying to engage staff. It is sometimes an uphill struggle but my experiences with children in Years 1,3,5 and 6 show that it is well worth it. We are just choosing content at the moment so any tips would be great.

I know Suffolk are using Uniservity for primaries and i've seen some secondaries using it too.

We are having a look at j2e.com - home page it seems to be excellent value. Our only concern so far is that it operates HTTP not HTTPS - anyone got any useful comments on this please.

At Eirias High School(UK) my friend IT director is using Joomla e-learning system

 

As far as i heard - they are happy.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm not convinced by this poster, 2 posts and he's already got a friend of a friend of a friend using systems that make people "happy" (in the UK)!

Take a look at Frogteacher.com

 

You may find that a local secondary school has it installed already and you can have a primary version installed on their server. This will give you a satellite install where the VLE sits on the secondary school's server. They can provide you with first-line technical support too which may be useful as they may only be down the road!
