I'm looking to buy a backup device for my home PC.

Looking to backup approx 50GB - preferably without using compression, but flexable on that.

Not SCSI but USB is acceptable. Probably External is preferable to Internal.

Any good recommendations?

Lacie USB 2.0 hard drive. We use the bigger models at work for server backups. They are simple and fast.

I think they go as small as 70Gb. Which is just what you want.

How about one of those home NAS boxes? Let it sit on your network and do automated backups. You can get RAID ones too if you're paranoid!

Netgear do this that supports RAID 1, you just need to add your choice of drives. 2 x 80Gb drives won't set you back that much.

Buffalo Terrastation? they do a home version. I know its a bit on the high capacity side but a nice solution if you have the money

EDIT: i just saw how much one of these actually is... lol forget what i said

I've got a terrastation at home.. its the 0.6TB model (smallest) and i've got it set up as a RAID5 array so usable space is 450GB.. That then backs up weekly to a external USB drive which i take to my parents house and keep in there safe.. Just in case there's a fire at my house and the terastation goes up in smoke..

Paid £175 2nd hand from eBay

I am paranoid though! :)

I'm quite keen on these:

Cheap as chips , a doddle to use (just chuck a drive in and close the cover, no faffing about with screws), select your own hard drive, quick with eSATA. Basic unit works out more than Geoff's selection but you have more flexibility - You can swap extra drives when you start running out of room, and you can migrate all your drives to a different RAIDed unit when your data grows.

If you don't need eSATA, they do a twin drive version on USB:

How about a HP DAT72i USB Tape Drive? 72GB on the tape good choice IMHO. I personally have an LTO Ultrium drive on my PC when I have a SCSI card in it.
