TechSupp Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 After the BETT show wisit we were very taken by the Samsung NC10 Netbook for use in the classroom (Year 6). Anyone got any views on this netbook or what other reasonable ones, impressed with the size of screen, batter life etc. We would need ability to run XP Pro, have a reasonable hard disk etc, min 1Gb ram but would like more if possible. Also anyone got any suggestions for a reasonable storage unit we could use to store them in, only looking to get 6 initially and if it went well get more so would need room for expansion.

Oddly enough got one today for one of our SMT team to use at home. I have a feeling these won't be durable enough for kids to use. Felt a tad flimsy. We've upgraded the Ram to 2gb and runs smooth as a whistle with XP Pro. All in all very good but would worry about life expectancy in hands of children with stubby fingers.

On our (MS) BETT stand, we had a "Wall of Cool" with a range of 10 netbooks, and on Wednesday night I took them to dinner with a group of teachers & network managers, and over puds, everybody rated them. The overall conclusion was that the NC10 was the most desirable device that people wanted. Must admit after playing with it at BETT I could see good use for the Fizzbook in the right location, i'd have more confidence in that surviving in a primary school than the others. But then it perhaps would be also suited to 6th form learners as they are just giant kids

Have one school who want to go the Fizzbook way and one the Samsung way. Suppose I'll see who's right in the end

Haptic Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Im a huge Fizzbook Spin fan so i would say they are by far the best educational netbook on the market ! with great software ( once you know how to use it ! ) I would agree with Headt18 regarding the Fizzbook Spins, the feedback we have been given from the many educational establishments that have purchased these from us has only been great , Although I would take a look at the Dell 2100 also.

tech_guy Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 The NC10 with 2GB Ram and Win XP Pro is a great bit of kit. I love mine to bits. Not sure how robust they would be in an education environment though.

Not that it's any problem you understand, I'm just curious as to what prompted you to pick up on a conversation which is over a year old

What's the current Samsung equivalent/replacement of the NC10? Keep threatening to buy the wife one so she can play Scrabble on Facebook instead of using the 'brick' of an Acer Aspire she has, but never sure what model to go for.

gshaw Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 We have a fleet of netbooks now, all Samsung, mostly NC10s but now it's the N130 that's replaced it. N130 is cheaper to buy than the NC10 was, pretty much down to the fact they've removed the extra chrome trim and other decorative bits so it looks a bit cheaper but functionally works the same and possibly better battery life I read somewhere? Keyboard is best in class, only thing that's better is the Lenovo x100e but that costs almost double the price of an N130 so it should be good! (I bought an x100 and rather impressed with it so far so if you're loaded with cash go for those!) 2GB RAM upgrade is a must, minimum spec for any machine here and for the price makes a massive performance difference. Also get the extended warranty as you may well be needing it if they're going to be given some rough treatment over time 1
PeteHopton Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 I wish the keyboard on my q series samsung was decent. I also wish I got more than 2:30 out the battery. Netbooks are too slow for me I get impatient, anyone know a fast laptop with decent graphics and battery? (any don't say apple)
