So I'm going to BETT Wednesday and Thursday, and stopping overnight. But I've been told by the school that I won't get any money for meals.

Now what's the policy for this? Can this be allowed and if so is it standard practice because my Dad (who works at County Hall) does get money for meals when going on courses.

We do have meal allowances in our expenses system but to be honest I've never claimed anything as I figure I'd be feeding myself at home anyway. I'm also pretty grateful for my school given they pay my rail fare and hotel bill (which include breakfast anyway).

Plenty of people on here aren't even getting to go 'cos their schools won't stump up so I wouldn't too bothered about meals if it were me.

We get a meal allowance if we are asked to go in an offical capacity. If its a case of *if you want to go then you can have the time off* it tends to be at own cost. (county council)

If you're being "forced" to go, then I would demand meals/drinks.

Otherwise just don't go. It's bad enough trapsing down to London and negotiating everything without being proper fed & watered.

I'm happy to have the train fair paid, but even then I don't claim for meals and tube fairs, partly because the tube ones not an easy one as I have an Oyster card as I'm a frequent visitor to London so its not as if i've got an easy recipt for that travel card as I use a PAYG setup on my Oyster Card (and i tend to flit around stations to avoid the mass crowds as i'm getting good at tube juggling so the online option can look messy), and if I go at a weekend I often stay over and see friends, go to the theatre, shopping etc.

I'm not being forced to go - I'm happy to go but at the same time the school wants one of the techs there. They've paid for my train and hotel but as it's classed as CPD time I see this as only right.

@Hightower:

I believe if it is part of your CPD then the school should be footing the bill for everything within reason, this should include your meals. If you were going on a course which was held at County or Spennymoor ITSS then your meals would be provided by them and so the school would bear the cost.

Not forgetting the amount of coffee you drank at the last meeting.... you could tell it was free of charge!

Well free pizza on the edugeek stand at lunchtime is one less meal for you to buy :)

Ben

I know :D

I hope people don't think I'm being twisty - just thought I'd see what the general thought was among us.

See you all at BETT next week. I'll be the one slipping pizza in my pocket so I don't have to pay for my evening meal either :D

I went on a course in October and the school paid for travel + hotel. Daytime meals were included in the course and breakfast as part of the hotel.

When I got back, the finance woman asked what I'd eaten in the evening and when I said I just grabbed McDonalds, she said where's the receipt. Said I didn't have one and she said "silly man, you could have claimed that as well, we pay for your meals!"

Wish I'd have known, I would have used the hotels restaurant for my meals and not got a big mac!

They are paying my travel expenses for going to BETT, but as I'm only there the day, I won't ask about food payment

Haha, take a packed lunch. Hmmm, I'm there two days and eat like a horse. The size of my bag would be massive! - get a feeling paying for my own meals might be cheapers than paying for an extra ticket for the train
