How do you organise your OU's?

Happy Christmas to one and all!

 

Just asking you guys, how do you organise your OU's? just asking cuz i wanna move around our student OU its really all over the place, i was thinking putting them into years BUT this means moving them each yr...:S

 

Would like to know how you all do it?

For students:

 

School Staff > Students > Year of 2004
                       > Year of 2005
                       > Year of 2006
                       > Year of 2007

Organise them by year of *entry* to the school - that doesn't change.

I usually break down into

 

Staff

 

Students

>Intake 2002

>Intake 2003

 

Etc,

Or exit. It makes it a little clearer when they expire (and can be removed to backup storage) - admittedly the maths isn't hard anyway, but it is a slightly different approach.

I have them in years. I dont move them each year, just rename the OU and the group their a member of.

 

S6 becomes S6.left. S5 then becomes S6 etc etc.

 

Takes about 3 mins tops.

I do them as most people have said so Entry01,Entry02 etc.

Mostly by year of entry ( 02, 03, 04, 05 ), although it does mean that "08" are the current year 7 and "07" are the current year 8.. just to make matters as confusing as possible.

 

We do have a bunch of Pre Windows 2000 users who are just plonked (technical term here) into the students OU, but it's just too damn difficult to move/sort them (although they are all in groups called 01, 02, etc)

I always had them by year, then house, two things which didn't change and let me provide rewards for winners of house contests easily (we used to allow access to certain games at lunch for the leading house in each week).

Ours is a bit of a funny one really, because we script the creation of all our accounts we basically have all the student user objects in one single container in AD.

 

Domain Root --> College Users --> Students --> Generated Accounts

 

We also hold our staff and temp accounts in the same fashion:

 

Domain Root --> College Users --> Staff --> Generated Accounts

 

With the exception of the following:

 

Domain Root --> College Users --> Staff --> IT Support

 

Domain Root --> College Users --> Students --> Online Testing

 

Domain Root --> College Users --> Adimistrators --> Server Admins

hmm, we always named user accounts by year of entry:

 

eg 07smithA

 

and then just had OU's for upper and lower school.

 

Seemed overkill to have an OU per yeargroup.

Up to now, we have used Winsuite, which creates its own groups. I've taken the Chinese New Year animal for the new Y5 intake and translated it into French, so we have had Cochon, Singe, Chien, Raton etc. Now we have ditched Winsuite we will have an OU for all pupils and their username will incorporate the year they enter the High School, that way they will keep their same username when they go up.

Much the same as everyone else except I've been using "graduation" years instead of entry ones.

 

Works quite well but I think the prepend with the same year would help resolve the duplicate logins problem we have from using firstinitial+surname .

Like others we use Intake 08, Intake 07, Intake 06 etc.

 

For user ID's we use their admission number as this is unique to each student. We drop the leading 0 and replace with a B as the school name starts with a B.

 

Strangely pupils don't have any problem remembering this number, pity they can't remember their passwords as well.
