Quackers Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 How come "jenny_urey" has BANNED next to here name? I'd say go down the Insight route, price is good, and the its the best parent access solution i have seen yet.
jenny_urey Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I was blocked for a few days for mentioning sales stuff Have to be careful what I put on here! I'm back and resisting the temptation of mentioning what we do Jen
jenny_urey Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Hi Jenny, Thanks for your input but was wondering and by looking at your website it seems that you only interface with Capita Sims.net, how about other MIS systems on the market like Serco or RM to name a few? I’m also interested in how parents view the schools data? I could not see a login for parents from your website so assume it would be a login attached to a schools website? Does the school or college have to be using PARS software for attendance or behaviour to enable parent or carers to view this type of information? Many Thanks Chris Hi Chris Need to be careful with what I write here as I dont want to be seen as advertising. 1. We only 'interface' with SIMS for various reasons. 2. Parents view the data by logging on to the internet hosted by school - not sure how else to answer that via Edugeek or exactly what you mean; ie a technical answer or user friendly answer. 3. No schools dont need PARS as its SIMS data although PARS schools will be able to see more information as it can read that too ...though once again I cant tell you exactly what on this forum. Not sure if you were at BETT? John demonstrated your software to me and I know some of the guys came over to see our software too. I'm guessing not due to the questions. Although competitors, we do catch up with your guys at BETT and always have a drink with them when we can - usually on 'grab a bottle night!' good to know what each other do in the market and good to have some competition out there.. (although a girl on your stand was rather rude about our product to one of my customers - who told me the following week in a SLT meeting. Doh!) Due to issues with sales driven information on here, may I suggest that you contact me on [email protected] and you can ask as many questions as you like and I can answer them fully for you Thanks! Jen
Bromcom_John Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Oh you where THAT Jenny... I didn't realise else I would have been more general IT chatty To Tonyyoung - Give us a call on the Helpdesk as the lesson attendance should now be able to get written back into SIMS. Its a recent development and may still have some teething issues but these are being worked through.
PhilNeal Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Just to set expectations - if you haven't bought our software to deal with lesson marks, don't expect to see anything in SIMS!

gillro Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Hi Does the 2010 target apply to special schools does anyone know? THanks
Serco_Rob Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 At Serco Learning we have offered parental access for free as part of our standard MIS price for seven years. Notre Dame High School in Sheffield who were key in working with Becta around the parental access agenda and what the framework should look like have offered parental access through our Facility MIS for some time now. Im happy to discuss this with people if they want to personal message me.
dalbuc01 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Insight from tascsoftware is excellent. It is extremely easy to configure, reliable and gives access to: attendence behaviour (+ _ reports cards, detentions etc) assessment data from sims assessment manager as well as exam entries, results and coursework sims linked documents And many other feature too numerous to mention. More importantly they are very responsive to suggestions / requests and have superb tech support. They have even supported us in making all this data availiable through out VLE! Definately recommended.
Sivadam Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Serco Rob, Just to set the record straight for others not in the area - there are now schools also within Sheffield LA that are also providing Online Reporting via SLG. At least one has been doing so since since last year.
Serco_Rob Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Sivadam, Never meant to give that impresson at all - there is a lot of parental access going on everywhere now with us and SIMS and so on. I was simply reffering to that school as an example as I know they were quite involved with Becta around parental reporting. I want to be on here to answer questions, not to score points, but thanks for pointing it out if you thought people might get that impression. Ive had some good PMs though from schools asking about the topic, so Im just helping to answer points where I can. Thanks Rob
Sivadam Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) Sometimes it is more telling what is not said than what is. From your post re. Sheffield, it would have been easy for a reader to think that your system held sway in Sheffield rather than holding a minority position! Edited December 8, 2009 by vikpaw Moderation

Sheffield, it would have been easy for a reader to think that your system held sway in Sheffield rather than holding a minority position! I respectfully disagree. How can referencing one school lead you to think it's a generalisation for the whole city?!
Sivadam Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) I suppose it depends on the slant you take and the environment that you are operating in ......... Edited December 8, 2009 by vikpaw Moderation
Sivadam Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Just to emphasis that this is my LAST post in this thread!
GREED Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Blimey did this thread get out of hand quickly!
Guest monkeyx Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 We could have used Eportal to allow parents access to student data, but used our Moodle system to link to our Facility/Eportal. This allows us to filter what information is available from our MIS and also allows parents to see what learners have been doing on the schools Learning Platform. See Houghton Kepier Learning Platform | Open Source Schools for more.
AIT Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 What MIS software do you run? We use the SIMS webparts to give access to parents to view their son daughters data. Have a look here: SIMS Learning Gateway Demo - Capita Education Services Secondary schools I think need to have this in place by September 2010 and Primary schools by September 2012. we do exactly the same. the sims slg. not very nice and takes a long time to setup. but it meets criteria.
Sylv3r Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 we do exactly the same. the sims slg. not very nice and takes a long time to setup. but it meets criteria. The new SLG Roadmap mentions an overall of design next year, so the look and feel may change for the better.
jenny_urey Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 (edited) We've recently installed SIMS Learning Gateway, so far we've not gotten anyone using it yet. It's not cheap, but then nothing from Capita ever seems to be... There is fortunately, something within the requirements, that says "... regularly updated..." or words to that effect, it does not mean you have make todays registers available... regular can mean once a term... or even once a year, everyone is assuming daily. If I had the chance to go again, I would have the bi-annual reports that go out to the students exported as PDF, and then give the parents access to this (as the registration data is stored on this). As this is gonna be a lot cheaper/easier than any other solution. Edited January 12, 2010 by Dos_Box
jenny_urey Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hi, Would there be any problems with having an external Broadband Link and letting staff in through there? D Dont forget your two factor authentication .. recommended for any schools releasing pupil information above IL4 ie... address, SEN....
Tonyoung Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Jenny what days are you going to be at BETT ?

Definately recommended. I had an online demo from Tasc software today. I was very impressed. It's an easy to use front end for parents and equally easy back end for administration staff. Compared to Capita's solution it's far cheaper and much less complex to implement. I will be signing on the dotted line when the quote comes through next week.
timzim Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) Thanks both. The LEA has bought licences for SLG for all schools, so that comes online soon. The LEA has procured a VLE for all primary schools (Fronter) which is already online we just have to figure out how we are going to use it. More work but it keeps me off the streets. Some of your LEA may well find themselves out on the streets fairly soon as they didn't do their homework - apparently Fronter are about to release their own online reporting tool (in May).
