Snow please!

I said last night- if there's snow, I will be VPN'ing.

 

Last time, the head said "we won't close even if it's up to the windows."

 

He left it so late to start closure that most parents couldn't get through, and busses/taxis/trains had all stopped. Took me 3 hours to do a 10 minute trip. WHERE were the gritters? No idea. No road clearing/treating anywhere at all. Cars abandoned, others playing ice-skating.

 

I went down a dual carriageway hill backwards, because it was deserted, and untreated, and frankly the Astra wanted to do it and wasn't taking any correction. White knuckle for 3 hours. Not fun, never again.

 

Last night was good though...cars and busses sliding on ice everywhere. I had snow mode on, and took a back lane home...but I couldn't resist turning it off and playing with drifting the car. Automatics are fun on ice! I was sat watching from the window of my study as cars slid past, or idiots tried to use throttle inadvisedly. Golf R32s are impressive, but...heh...

 

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't live by the river, and have to go down a BIG, traffic crowded hill and then up another to get home.

Oh, and if the school is closed don't you have to go and report to your nearest LEA school? (Might be different rules for you Sylv3r).

 

Yes, that is the case with Durham LA, I don't think anyone follows that rule but I will just work from home.

 

I think the school closure was mainly due to the bad snow in the consett area, bus company saying they couldn't guarantee they could pick the students up etc.

 

I sent a quick TXT to all staff and parents this morning at 7:30 this morning informing them that the school was closed. I think I made a lot of people happy this morning

A bit down in Kendal - not huge amounts but enough for us to close for the day! I think that is the 1st full day in about 9 years here!

I've postponed my planned visit today because of this...

 

Every year, without fail, the idiot "100mph is the norm" brigade have to relearn the laws of physics and friction (or lack of it) and kill a few dozen innocent people before Darwin thins out the more reckless and everyone slows down.

Not closed here.... although lesson 1 was 30 min late due to teachers not knowing what was going on... its only a bit of snow... get over it!! ! I can't stand people that drive slow through slush... ok it is a bit slippy but come on, its not as bad as proper snow..

Last weekend we had thick fog, was going about 30 on the A46 with everyone else when some idiot comes past at least 80 with no lights on!

 

I have no issue with people going to Hell under their volition but I resent people trying to take me with them.

Well im in Pontefract at the moment, its snowed a decent amount here and were still open, it did take me 90mins to get into work, it usually takes me 30mins.

 

Im hoping the weather man is right and we get proper snow later so I will have to get home as it can get bad near me!

I'm pretty sure slush is no better or worse than snow especially in these temps... You take your ruddy time regardless.

Plenty of snow where I live, so even if the school was open I wouldn't have been in work today.

Huh? I'd say slush is just as, if not more dangerous than, snow. You end up with a reduced amount of friction due to a semi-liquid surface below your tires, with the possibility that it may be covering up ice too. So you end up not only with the possibility of skidding on the icy aspect of it, but also end up with the possibility of hydroplaning. Seems pretty dangerous to me!
