Our maths department have just purchased licences for Mathletics, is anyone else using it?

 

At the moment the pupils can't get enough of it and our head of maths would like to try and get 1 lesson per week into the timetable for next year however as we only have 1 IT suite he's going to try and include a batch of PC's or laptops in his budget.

 

I suspect that the novelty factor will wear off at some point, possibly before next september, has anyone else had any experience of this and roughly how long pupils have kept their interest in it?

We were looking at that! The content about it looks good on the website and looks like its working for you. But that just solves my problems with maths. Where is scienceletics?

Aren't they the people who do the World Maths Day? That was very popular here too, with some follow-up afterwards in class (not much though, I don't think; it was more used as a reward).

We have Mathletics and Spellodrome (their literacy offering) and our kids like yours just cannot get enough of it.

The deputy head has mentioned matheletics a few times, i'll have to check it out - I don't think our Subject Leader for Maths has been that keen when I have mentioned it in the past.

We're also using Spellodrome, we haven't got/found anything similar for any other subjects.

 

The pupils are very keen at the moment, many are even using it at home.

I'll have a word with our head of maths, I can't remember the exact price but its no way near £39 per student. I'm pretty sure it was below £5 per student.

It says on the site that an annual licence is £6 per student.

Your students will use it a lot, at my school students are always on it.

We used the Mathletics site last year with our year 7's and they loved it, so much so we won the National competition with 4 of our classes in the top 5

 

Availability of PCs and Laptops are essential.

Our Maths Dept uses MyMaths

We use Mathletics, and it seems also MyMaths.

 

We also use EducationCity and GridClub.

 

All get a good amount of use according to my internet logs.

We used this last year and it was an incredible success. The kids love it and it was amusing to watch as well. A few of our kids even ended up against teachers...

 

A hint for your pupils though. Do a countdown for entering the matchmaking system and there is considerably more chance of the kids being matched up against each other.

Our school looked at mymaths and mathlectics - the maths dept. chose mymaths. This works well alongside I am learning because that has content for every subject and what's good for me is I can see how long the students have spent revising PE and maths (my interests here!). The one thing which stands out with I am learning for me is the games which make the kids want to login and revise.

How does the mathletics purchasing work? Anyone know if you just need to buy enough licences for your concurrent connections? TIA...

You need to buy 1 license per pupil with Mathletics as they each get their own logon's

I think you can buy I am learning licenses per user at £10 each but we got a site license for £3k.

Do mathletics cap the cost or do a site license?

I can offer a perspective from both teacher and parent.

 

Initially great excitement and interest, both at home and at school, followed by pretty rapid dropoff. Some classes do seem to maintain enthusiasm, but in others interest just dies.

 

My own kids (primary aged) used it at home for two or three months after they got their school logon (which works at home also), but haven't logged on for ages. I just asked them now about school, and in 1 class its still going strong and in the other not at all.

 

Fortunatley, subsciption is a year by year proposition, and it is worthwhile to try it in your school for a year.

Weve had it for a few months,

 

Interest has faigned a little bit but some kids still like to sit on it all the time,

 

The biggest problem was the login, some of the younger ones couldnt remember them so I created a mini VB program and a AutoIT script which stored individuals usernames and password in their accounts and lets them automatically login from a link on the desktop

The best way to avoid any difficulties is to have your computer set to the Administrator log in when they are using Mathletics.
