What job do you hate or avoid at all costs?

 

Mine - Physically realigning fixed projectors when they've been knocked out of place, however easily they move when you don't want them to, ours are so stiff trying to move them back into line I'm convinced that I'm going to pull the pole out of the ceiling. tend to be a wus now and get the caretaker to move them back with some suitable excuse of not being tall enough:)

ANything to do with our video conferencing system. Ive never read a manual in my life, never had a problem working things out, was using BASIC at age 2, can manage CISCO routers blah blah, but i cant for the life of me work out , even after reading the 1 page manual, how to even connect to someone.

I'll do anything to avoid the ironing... in fact on I'm on here to avoid it now

I really dislike walking round the school at the end term switching off all the bits of kit that are left on such as DVD Players, Amplifiers, Projectors etc because everyone else is in too big a hurry to go home.

Fax machines, our almost, but not quite entirely unlike dos lighting desk and government websites.

 

Specifically cobbled together "just while we sort it out" $government_websites for sending in data. Thankfully the deputy heads have to wrestle* with those, rather than me.

PHOTOCOPIERS

 

 

You can't touch them without ending up with a set of custom-pleated fans or looking like you've been down a coal mine.

 

Ours aren't connected to the network; they have plugs on them but "they're not my problem"

 

Actually, I can unjam my own copying, but I make sure nobody else sees I know how!

Cleaning mice and opening up computers to clean them out with compressed air. There is no way at all to remain clean and dust free!

Just come back from fitting a new projector and spent half an hour trying to align the damn thing!!

One little milimetre too far and the picture is about a foot off the IWB!!

Move it back the same way and its off in all directions

As silly as it sounds I dread picking up the phone if it is reception calling. 99.9% of the time it is spam, and we have too much on to spend time telling random salespeople that we don't have any money for their junk

I as a rule never pick up the reception phone unless its an internal call

Anything to do with the audio system in our main hall or music studio. Too may wires, too many people poking around where they shouldn't.

 

Also, we only get called when it has all gone pear shaped, the room is full of people, and they sit there expecting you to work 'miracles' & fix it in a microsecond.

I wish we had that option. Our phone doesnt show us who is calling. I also wish our reception staff had a bit of common sense and realise that we really dont need or want 25 different IWB suppliers phoning us

When I worked not in education, It was picking up the phone and telling them "NO WERE NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR I.T. SERVICES!"

 

At the moment its, "my mouse doesn't work." - Have you tried plugging it in?

The jobs I hate are any that involve certain teachers running up to me shouting "the networks down, the networks down"... they almost all turn out to be more "My computers not working therefore the entire network MUST be down!"

 

I had this from the head of our pre prep earlier, it turned out that 1 person had forogtten their password(after using the same one since she joined...) and the other one had their network lead unplugged.

Dealing with any PC/Server that has important software/services on it that no one can remember setting up and that now runs just about ok if you never touch it but then you have to install something new and it messes up but not enough to start again from scratch ahhhhhhhhhh!

Without a doubt, cabling. Our building is a 1960's nightmare of shoddy building work and cheap shortcuts and it makes running cable hot, messy and time consuming.

 

You get filthy all day afterwards, and there is all the detritus that falls from the ceiling void: often half eaten many months old sandwiches from the canteen that the kids stuff up there, although last time we had to run cable down our main corridor my tech lifted a ceiling tile and a dead (very dead) mouse fell on his head. Laughed so much I fell off the ladder.

NB: I would hate ironing if I did any: I just hang things up on hangers when wet and then they are usually fine. If necessary I give them 5 mins in the tumble drier to get out the creases.
