Viglen Omnino III

I've just been having a look at the latest Viglen all in one machines and it appears they have moved to a new chassis that now comes with a 20" widescreen monitor!!

 

I'm wondering if they actually spoke to any schools about this idea, as we certainly won't be able to buy any more of them now, as we simply don't have the space for such huge screens!

 

What do others think about this?

How on earth are you fitting them into your room? We have 3 rooms of 35 computers, as our largest class is currently 33 pupils so we have some spare machines. But we couldn't fit anything bigger than 17" screens in there.

Ah, so not like most schools where space is more valuable than gold. I'm increasingly being asked to spec up machines which have next to no footprint on desks.

Hmm I can't help feeling they could have made the screen bezel alot smaller this would have kept the width close to that of the previous model LP-571/LP-591 which has a really big bezel. Hopefully the manufacturer will release smaller screen sizes in the future.

I'm slowly but surely moving towards thin client actually, but where fat clients are going to be replaced, that may be a lead contender.

 

If only those made by people like Cadar were a little cheaper. Then you'd just need to get a low footprint desk mount arm and it'd be so much simpler.

I had a viglen engineer here and he was saying that they are going to have problems at some point getting hold of parts for the old cases due to the manufacturer stopping making them. Is this true do you know? Seems how you sell the same chassis. We have a 3 year warranty on them, so any problems will be theirs to deal with, but it is an interested thing to wonder about though.

The Omnino HS chassis is still manufactured and current although Viglen aren't purchasing them anymore. Spares can still be obtained although Viglen should have a good stockpile of spares anyway. The main items are PSU, inverter, ad board and LCD panels.

We've got some of the very first Omnino machines and we get through inverter boards like there's no tomorrow. Anyone else had problems?

Viglen do consult with UK Educational bodies. The Omnino III itself was chosen as it fits the requirements best, you can see the same model wearing different manufacturers badges elsewhere on the web.

 

EU standards for computing classrooms where exams take place specify a minimum of 1 metre between the centre of neighboring PCs. The wider screens fit OK in our classrooms, yours must be really cramped. I wonder how your users have room to operate the mouse?

 

Incidentally, if you upgrade to the larger of the two screen sizes, it costs about £150. Viglen send over an engineer who fits a new faceplate to the existing screen, which has a narrower black border. It's still the same screen!

We found the Omnino v1 very reliable after settling in. The Omnino v2 did suffer from problems with the inverter board, also some models had problems with the PSU, the netcard, and the power button keeps getting stuck.

Our rooms are cramped, like a lot of schools. This comes from having not enough classrooms for the number of kids we've got. It also comes from having to change computer rooms from 20 machines to 35 machines to stop the need for sharing.

 

EU standards are a good thing, but there are very few schools with the money to be able to ensure they are followed. Especially middle schools like ours.

At lboro uni we had real room and desk space issues and we purchased the secure desks from ergo. I think they do them from 750mm wide although we took 900mm I think it was in the end as we got an extra 10 student spaces from 30 previously up to 40.

Just taken a look at the ergo website and looks like they are also in the all in one pc market. This could be another alternative for space saving ?
