Network Mono Laser?

Had REAL problems with Samsung printers ... awful devices in my experience.

I'm liking the Brother HL-2070N I bought earlier this year - very reliable and very cheap to run...

We've got a couple of Brother HL-5240s. Great little machines, cheap to run too.

We have quite a few samsungs and no real problems but those cheap ones listed we had the fuser go on one and it's cheaper to buy a new printer especially at that price than replace the fuser.

 

Otherwise the 2000 and 3000 series HP's are good.

I have real problems with the HP2015 printers. 1 of them keeps resetting its self to factory settings, they constantly drop off the network and require switching off and on for the server to recognise them again, a minor annoyance but none of my other printers do this. I also have a driver issue with the PCL5e driver which crashes the print spooler on the local machine when you add the printer from the network. This has only started recently, and HP have not managed to solve it yet (although to give them credit they have tried very hard)

 

It's possible these problems could be down to other issues on my network, but I've also had problems with HP2015 printers in a previous school.

 

However, they are excellent value for money, and the print engine on them is very reliable, and nice and quick and good quality, just a shame the networking and drivers don't seem to be as reliable for us. I've started buying the next model up, the HP 3005n, which in theory should have a lower TCO as the price per page is a lot lower, although the printer its self costs a little more at about £350 each.

Your users are doing this. If you hold down the green button it does one of three things, depending on how long you hold it down for.

 

Just pressing it = demo page

hold it down until the orange lights flash = settings page

longer = factory reset

 

So either your users have piled some stuff on the printer and jammed the button down or they are holding it down themselves in the vain hope to 'fix it'/'cancel'/'reset it'/.

As i thought a lot of good things for the HP, it was top of my list having got a non networked one else where which has been brilliant. Thanks.

We have a dozen or more HP 2015n printers. Recently we have had a couple of hardware faults, one inside warranty, the other outside. Both failures were due to the 'formatter' card going bad. If you research this on the WWW you will see loads of problems with these. The replacement cards are about £60, one of the replacement cards (bought directly from HP) failed after 3 months.......

The best way I have found is to NOT use a static IP address on your printers... Set them up to receive a dynamic address from your DHCP server but setup an IP reservation for them on the server. This way they will always get the same address and you don't have to worry about when the static one gets "forgotten"

This is how we do it - we have shed loads of these printers and they work fine. I didnt know about the factory reset on the button though - just waiting for the kids to find out about that one

That's what I do for most devices that want a static IP as it also means you can easily keep track of available addresses, and change the IP number if you ever want to without having to visit the printer, although i know you can do this in the web console of most printers these days anyway, but nice to have it all in one place.

Just don't put too many of them on one server, one of my sites is addicted to these little pieces of junk from a hardware and cost perspective (they brought like 15 in one go ) but there is a rather large issue with them. At least for us their drivers leak memory like an open water main.

 

They leak this memory from the non-paged pool which means that when it fills up it simply fails out all of the primary services as they run out of memory. We have to restart the print spooler service every 30 minutes to keep that server running. We have tried several drivers all of which still cause the problem.
