Hi

My finance director wants to move away from Macs to Windows based for music department

he wants to know if there are any viable alternatives to Logic Pro music suite , that runs on Windows

Steinberg Cubase was suggested …that any good?

cheers!

Viable alternatives? Yeah, drop the course.

the on-costs of sub-par Windows based alternatives is just awful. Better to drop the course than waste everybody’s time.  (Don’t get me wrong, it can be done, but compared to logic on Mac’s there will be constant little problems sucking the joy out of teaching that course/supporting that department).

the real alternative to logic is pro tools, but that’s a faff in a lab environment.

if the department is high performing, ripping their tools out from them is unconscionable. If the department is not, cut your losses, drop the course and save money on the teacher salaries too.

what do the teachers think? They need to be the ones tasked with finding alternatives.

I'm in the somewhat unique position of being a veteran IT professional, veteran audio engineer and former teacher of Music tech.
For my purposes as an audio engineer, Pro Tools (On a mac) is a way more powerful product. Editing audio in Logic is like trying to do keyhole surgery with a hacksaw.

HOWEVER

For Music Tech courses, Logic is unbeatable. None of the other DAW's at any price point come bundled with such a rich set of plugins and sounds - despite what alternative products all tell you.
Also, admittedly it's less bad since Win 11, but DAW's, or Sibelius for that matter, are a horrible experience as a user within a shared network environment on Windows.

As pointed out above, the turnkey solution of Logic on a Mac is fantastic. You have to deal with the Joys of Jamf, but other than that, it's really very good.

Reason Free edition although limited to 16 tracks.

I've never used the track version of Reason though because I stopped using it before they brought in tracks, I simply linked it to another DAW when I used it using re-wire.
