Currently on 1000 up/down and 100kbps up/down as a backup They have offered dual 1000 up/down for the same cost which is approx £5683 per year with a min of 3 years commitment. robintech Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Syntura, similar (ex vat) but with 4G/5G backup instead of a second leased line , prefer a second line only if it went a different physical route to the existing one.

Further to this i setup a Link Load Balancer to actually make use of the backup line, I don't know about anyone else but i don't think its worth the DFE requirement for a backup line. Leased Line is expensive for a reason and then you want a backup line?

Even on the best SLA you're looking at hours of down time when someone cuts through the your fibre. They also say that each switch should have redundant paths back to the network core, and the core switches should have hardware redundancy/ resiliency. I'm actually having a hard time persuading people we need to replace our (nearly 20 year old) switches because the resilient design has masked hardware failures from the end users time and time again. They think it is reliable, despite (these days) multiple failures switches per term (which is getting to the point its going to cause a problem). These days, with reliable, resilient infrastructure, IT problems impacting teaching and learning are all (mostly) the fault of the teachers, never the network: "didn't actually connect thier laptop to HDMI or power cable" "let the kids rip the keys off", "after using it 5 times a day for the last five years, forget how to use windows+p", "classcharts is down" "I deleted my work and I don't know how to use the SharePoint recycle bin" (TBF that last one is a training issue, we don't actively teach that in advance because nobody will remember anyway, but when they do, the fear/relief etches the new skill into their soul) Having the network connectivity never be the problem is truly transformational.

I think that price only includes a relativly small amount of data per month, but you can add more on a flexible basis, so if you need need an emergency connection for a few days while your main connectino was down it might be an affordable option.

Yeah tough time to make decisions! interestingly I have had more services like MS, Cloudflare etc... go down more than the leased lines! whats next backup email, backup MIS lol!

There's a serious difference between what we're paying and what you're paying, and you're getting Smoothwall the same as we are, and we don't get VOIP mobiles et al either..... I'd be very interested to compare notes!

Yeah, actually we do. I could pivot to on prem exchange or gmail in about 24hrs. And the MIS syncs so many different ways that any one service outage has minimal impact.
