Visually impaired student coming in September

Hi all,

 

We have a student joining us in September who has incredibly poor eyesight. We have been advised to give her an iPad and then share the teacher's screen so that she can see it on the iPad and zoom in etc. The issues I'm having with this are;

 

We can't trust the teachers to share their entire desktop. Not because they aren't trustworthy, just because people make mistakes and if they are sharing their screen, freeze the TV for the rest of the class and then open SIMS/Email/whatever, it could be inappropriate for the student viewing the shared screen to see it.

Any screen sharing software I've looked at which shares a particular window can't handle the fact that when you run a PowerPoint slideshow, it actually opens the slideshow in a new window. This means that if the teachers shares PowerPoint and then runs the slideshow, the student viewing what was shared still sees PowerPoint, rather than the slideshow which is now showing for everyone else. If they run the slideshow before sharing, it runs full screen so the teacher then can't see the sharing software anymore to share the slideshow. Hope that all makes sense! Feels a bit waffly.....

 

Ideally they could connect to the TV itself as the will then always see what the rest of the class sees, but not all of our TVs can do that.

 

Anyone got any tips please?

We use Splashtop Streamer, was recommended from the people who supported the child in another school etc. it works well, and yes I guess the staff member needs to be careful with what is on the screen etc, but that is the same for the IWB as a whole.  They have got used to sharing the screen at the appropriate times and so on, the teacher can halt the stream to the ipad easily.  There are sometimes issues with connectivity but not very often and the app on the desktop needs to be restarted, about once a term i reckon, as the child moves between year groups I just move the app.  Its inexpensive and helps the individual too, we also got them the biggest screen Ipad we could, which helps too.

Yeah, we use Teams for this, and I've heard splashtop is great too. It is completely dependant on the individual Teachers stepping up to their responsibilities to make the lesson accessible while preventing leaking of sensitive data. Just as it is when they connect to the IWB/Panel.

 

If they can't be bothered to use the tools (splashtop or Teams) properly, that really is between the SENCO, HR and the Teacher to sort out.  

 

Lockdown teaching proved it was possible and pretty easy.

Also contact your local authority visual impariement unit they will often have info and equipment that may help or if the imparement is serious enough - they might even take on the pupil and provide 1:1 support in lessons etc.

This is identical to me! 

 

Been told to purchase ipad, add to wireless and install software which allows for electronic textbooks and screen sharing.

 

I just laughed at the SENDCO and said half of the staff have trouble remembering how to Duplicate/Extend screen, so asking them to use share their screen is going to be interesting to say the least!

We had a student that's not long left that was VI.

 

They had an IPAD And an app called JoinMe/GOTO Connect

(However if we had another student start with the same issues i would get them to use teams as its basically the same thing, and its not an extra bit of software to support)

The Student had a decent amount of support from the councils VI Team, some 1:1 support in lessons etc.

 

Very Rarely any technical issues

 

Staff not sharing the screen properly, or sharing the wrong thing is arguably not an IT Issue.

Had this at a previous school, the request to stream the teachers desktop to a tablet device. It was deemed to risky to do given the sensitive nature of some content the teacher might be working on and the chance of accidentally streaming it. Our compromises, given that we had a team for each class, was for the class materials to be uploaded in the team and could be accessed there. Screen annotations won't show for them but the VI student had a ta at all times would could help with that.

Obviously not IT related, but does anyone have any risks assessments, evac plans or anything else they'd be prepared to share?

Old skool, I had to provide a similar setup for a Primary pupil who had their own laptop. At that time we used RealVNC. I note that there is a RealVNC app for iPad.  Having said that, this was sometime ago and it’s likely not the best way to do it these days.
