VEEAM Backup Costs

Hi,

 

We are intending on using VEEAM for on-site backups (currently using DPM), and just wanted to get an idea on what licence type & costs other schools are paying? As one supplier has quoted us for VEEAM Data Platform Essentials (per 5x VMs) on a 5-year subscription. I assume this is the newer (e.g.  more costly) licencing model, as opposed to the cheaper legacy licencing (that was calculated per CPU??)

 

The requirement is to protect (up to) 20 Server VMs. (typical... VEEAM has since increased costs on 1st June 2025!!!)

The legacy licence was a perpetual licence with an upfront purchase cost and then a low support cost yearly.

 

Sadly you've missed the boat on that you can only get the new style yearly repeated infinite/ever increasing costs.  Sad really.

 

I am keeping my 10+ year old legacy veeam going for like £400 a year support cost.

We use Phoenix. Last annual renewal in February was for a 10 licence "Veeam Data Platform Foundation Universal Subscription License" for £800

We "rent" our Veeam licences as part of our cloud backup with CT Cloud

Alternate option - we use HornetSecurity (previously Altaro) VM Backup, paying yearly maintenance for support and software updates at about £250 per hypervisor; unlimited VMs with the Plus edition of the software as we run a Hyper-V cluster, upload to immutable cloud storage, auto configure backup for new VMs created etc.

Looks like initial cost should be a max of £545 per hypervisor if you don't need the features of plus - probably less via a reseller. https://www.altaro.com/vm-backup/pricing.php

Another alternative - Redstor, unlimited storage for onsite servers, O365 and Google workspace and no on-site box needed as it’s all in the cloud. Priced per pupil head count.

To be honest, we use Redstor for Education already, but was looking at upgrading our existing on-site backup server (currently DPM, temperamental and hardware out of support) to maintain the 3-2-1 rule. As not sure if using Redstor's Local Copy Feature (942 - ESE: How to keep a local backup copy) to a dedicated (file) server (or NAS) would suffice to be honest. However, it would be significantly cheaper than with VEEAM licencing etc, albeit with limited recovery options in comparison! (e.g. with VEEAM, can 'spin up' backups of VMs if needed etc).

 

Other options mentioned, e.g. CT Cloud (and Pea Soup elsewhere) include VEEAM I believe, but then I would be duplicating on cloud-based storage, which RedStor currently provides.

 

Ultimately, I just want to provision an on-site solution, without duplicating what we have already (or costs!) and with the knowledge that more 'data' is being stored within M365 this would be to to protect the on-site VMs predominately.

Ah fair enough, we do you use the local copy feature to off site NAS's (with 2fa every time admin access) and most servers are no more than 100G in size so it doesn't take long to download the VHD and create a new VM if it was needed.

 

The VM's are also all replicated to other hosts so in the event of hardware failure they can be booted up quickly and that creates an additional backup of sorts to protect against host failure.

I'm looking at doing exactly the same, the unlimited storage and 7 year retention seems to make sense for us now. Simplifies the whole backup solution, I'll use the old backup server as the onsite mirror copy

Always recommend PeaSoup, pick up some offsite storage with them and they throw in the Veeam licensing. Very reasonably priced.

Peasoup are very helpful and have given us a 6 month trial of 2TB cloud storage plus Veeam licensing.

 

It my first time using Veeam and it takes some getting used to but we only need a simple file backup and so far I’ve not figured out how to run a file backup job and save to the cloud. Backing up a complete VM saves to the cloud without problems but we just need the file backup. 
 

We also have a trial of Backup Assist and great for file backups so I’m leaning towards Backup Assist.

We use peasoup and have used them for about 4 years + really good support

 

in regards to your file back up

 

if you have guest file support turned on you can mount the backed up vm and browse the guest files which gives you access to files you might need.

 

is this the sort of thing your looking for ?

The MSP manages the host and we only have access to the client which is why I said we are looking for a file backup.
 

The MSP backs up the VM but doesn’t keep it long something like a week if memory serves me right. 
 

In my last school everything was in house and that was so much easier as we kept the VM backups for 3 weeks but also had a file backup using Backup Assist and that kept files for the year. 
 

Did I mention the MSP charges £1800 for 28 days of file backup which is why we want the file backup in house.
