What size screen do you have in your IT suites?

 

i assume no 4:3

 

we have one suite thats 21" widescreen and we've been ask to look at bigger screens.... thoughts?

 

Rest are 22" 24"..... i suspect it's just a case of mine is bigger than yours!

Ours are a mix of 22" & 23", never had any complaints with these

Pretty much universally 22". Desk space is often limited for larger.

We’re 24” pretty much across the board except some areas which see higher levels of damage. They get whatever ewaste we’ve got lying around

Still have one suite of 4:3 LCDs and a few more dotted around. Nearly there, should be gone by next academic year or soon after.

For the pupil ICT suite, 24" all-in-one iMacs. Anything bigger wouldn't have fitted in the available space, they are as close together as we can reasonably get them. Staff also have 24" all-in-ones in their classrooms. We have a few 27" monitors bought a while back for those doing timetabling, but most staff now find those too big - 24" seems about the biggest people want to go for a desktop machine.

Only last year did we get rid of our 4:3 toughened glass monitors for 22" monitors that we knew of another sitemwere getting rid of. Have a room of 19" wide screen and a few 20" around. They are all a mix of HDMI/VGA, DP/VGA, DP/HDMI/VGA, VGA/DVI.

In case anyone is wondering, 27" is too big.

 

Mostly 24" here, but that's because we refreshed some very very old all-in-ones quite recently. Had we done it when they should have been retired we'd probably ave gone for 22" due to costs.

 

The 27" ones were thrown in as part of a value-add effort by one bidder on a more recent refresh, (they'd already got the best price but, hey if they wanted to be sure!) We declined that offer the next time!

We're striving for 24" across the board. 24" is the sweet spot for 1080p resolution and text readability without having to mess around with scaling (obviously we have some that have sight issues that have scaling).

 

As it stands, we have some ancient 19" 1600x900 AIOs which will be defunct in October, all of which are on budget to replace, and a handful of 23" 1650x1050 desktops, which are about on par as far a readability goes. The PCs that these are on will likely be replaced with 24" FHD AIOs, so the screens will probably go to admin to replace aging secondary screens, where they have 19" or 20" low res monitors.

Mostly 21. Would revise one or two if there was a use-case. Had one complaint from a student last year saying they weren't comfortable with such a small screen yet perfectly happy using their mobile phone in lesson constantly!

Mostly 22'' for student machines. Staff machines have 24" screens pretty much across the board (we've got a couple of users on 27" screens because they "need the space"). Edited February 13, 2025 by Rob_D

24" here too because they were a decent size/price ratio. I've noticed now that 27" displays have fallen into that price range now so if I were starting from scratch I'd go 27" - the only problem is, they smash a lot easier - a combination of them being bigger "targets" but also more fragile - e.g. misbehaving kid throws a pritt stick and smashes one (or even accidents - in music a girl plugged a guitar in to record, she's playing it, swings around hits the screen and it smashes) - so we get much more smashed screens with 24" than we did with 19" - - so with 27" I'd expect even more broken ones.

 

27" might be a bit too big as well to fit bunched together with our large class sizes - we have a class with 35 and 22" barely fit together. It's a shame, I have a 32" and a 29" for my office, I'd prefer even bigger, a nice big 4K screen. Maybe next year!

It's not a bad idea... A lot of younger people these days are very used to using portrait-mode displays the whole time, it might make the desktop PC a bit more approachable / useable for some. I did have someone (with limited vision) wanting a large version of their phone for using WhatsApp, one of the VeryPC all-in-one-ish desktops with a portrait mode monitor on the front (I think it just managed 27") worked quite well.

I tried using a 29" monitor in portrait mode as it fit better on my desk that way, but I found a lot of things just didn't quite fit - I'm sure I could have re-arranged things but in the end I just flipped it back to landscape.

It's interesting watching all the 1970's "science-fiction infomercials" that technology companies put out showing what computers will look like in the far off year of 1999 - they all had portrait screens in them - one had this awesome wrap around desk that had the screen built in as part of it!
