We did look at a refurb 5412 zl2 10x 8 port 1\10gb sfp+, 2x 8 port muti gig poe + and 4 x PSU for 11k with 3 year warranty.

 

I would love another zl2 but not sure if it worth waiting for a new model.

On a side note, Aruba finally released a new version CX 5420 (or are doing so very soon, so be careful with buying 5406R's as they'll no doubt be EOL soon if you're concerned with dates etc)

I'd need two of those to replace our 8212zl. We have 20 10Gb/s fibre lines, and another dozen or so 1gb fibre links. so that's four of the six bays filled. We might be able to get away with 1 10Gb/s copper per server to each side of the chasis, but I'm pretty sure the reference designs for hyper-v and vsphere clusters require more connections than that.

 

Also feels wrong to not be upgrading the backbone links to 40gb/s given it we went to 10gb/s in 2009 and we have project on the horizon where being able to throw >10Gb/s from off site to the media suite is on the wish list.

 

I mean I'm glad to have something modern as an option as a 'natural' successor the venerable procurve, but just sad it doesn't seem to have more oomf that the sixteen year old 8200zl.

The 12 bay is more equivalent to the 6410 which is the more powerful one (up to 100gb modules etc) but obviously the cost that comes with the next jump :p

 

Generally 5406 -> 5420 and 5412 -> 6410 etc

I recently replaced my 8206zl with an Aruba CX 6300M 24-Port SFP+ JL658A just this summer. Going to add a second one next year and stack them. (EDIT: Should add, screw paying Arubas prices for gbics. Got a load from fs.com for peanuts instead, they work a treat.)

 

All my edge switches are Unifi based ones, but i couldn't bring myself to go near Unifi for core responsibilities yet, though i know a few edugeekers have done or are doing it with their new fortress gateway devices.

 

I've now got three 8206zl chassis, two populated, sat doing nothing..............just in case lol. can't bring myself to dispose of them.

We have two Cisco (Meraki) C9300x's.

They are stupidly expensive.

We didn't buy them.

We are in a new build school.

The contractors fitted them.

I'm fooked in 10 years when they need replacing.

 

We buy these now as our go to core for all schools. Replacements to the MS350 range.

Thanks but we don't all own time machines to bring back kit from 10 years in the future. Otherwise i'd be sat here with my MacBook Pro 18" M25 Pro Max Ultra

Cisco 6506 with a spare in stock

 

Asked existing supplier about replacing, however it would cost an insane amount to get not a lot, other than compliance with kit not being as old, ACL can still achieve a lot and 10gb to each edge means real world speeds approaching theoretical maximums

 

Not the newest obviously, older Cisco gear provides great value however

Most other times in Schools and MAT its always been HP ZL I have seen

The M4300 48 port core - 24 ports of 10GB SFP+ and 24 10GBP copper ports in a 1U case; I even have a spare in the cupboard for hotswaps

The HPE 5400 (6/12 etc) has been replaced by the newer Aruba version I listed on page 1 so EOL won't be far down the road I'd expect

 

Obviously have to balance the cheaper 5400 vs the longer support etc

Moved away from Chassis and gone stacking. more resilient as if entire chassis fails you lose all modules, but if lose a switch network can still function if team server and core to edge uplinks between multiple switches and with stacking, full redundancy.
