Ban on sale of mercury based lamps (projectors)

Time to start investing in laser or display screens, or at the very least ensure you have a stock of lamps available. Unsure what this will mean for disposal of these lamps, but now is the time to start worrying about it.

Indeed, we've already taken note for our remaining (hall) projector and considering options (bloody large screen or laser. Hoping for the big screen, seen 98" ones at not shocking price levels)

Same boat we have a bout 50 and most relitivley new EB-X49s and just maybe 3 laser projectors.

We've had central funding to replace projectors with interactive screens.

 

I have heavily utilised this funding! We will only have a handful left after this year, from a peak of 70+.

Our only mercury lamps are in the school halls, but they're big 'ol units with specialised lenses which will be horrifically expensive to replace.

 

I've mentioned it to BMs and Heads to get the ball rolling to budget for replacements/alternatives.

We already had casio bulbless ones but most are being replaced with 86" samsing boards.

 

I'v got two big ones in the hall and gym.

 

Hall is a £3k epson bulb

Gym is a £3k epson laser

 

The bulb one has superior image quality and brightness. So bare that in mind if you think a replacement big laser is gonna be just as good as your bulb one it probably isnt and you may need to go up a more expensive model in the lineup.

Can anyone recommend a decent laser projector for a standard classroom? Obviously touchscreens are the way to go but due to extremely technophobic individuals all other options will need to be ruled out first.

Don’t put in technology for one individual. They’ll get over it.

The technophobes will soon get over it and most likely will find they come to like the touchscreen. Get SLT on side and they will have to adopt the new technology.

SLT are the problem, one headteacher specifically. He's passionately opposed to the idea of touchscreens, so I need to do an Inception on him so he thinks it's his idea.

 

Just goes to show, you make good decisions and they tend to pay off in ways you didn't expect. Those schools that replaced all their projectors years ago will be feeling pretty smug right now.

Will Epson projector lamps be available after February 2027?

Mercury lamps used in Epson projectors will continue to be available after February 2027 to allow the continued and optimal use of our products. The RoHS Directive allows the use of spare parts after the end of the exemption to continue to repair, reuse or to update the functionalities of electrical and electronic equipment.

 

Epson projectors, with mercury lamps, are compliant with the RoHS Directive. This exemption takes over any requirements listed in Regulation EU 2017/852 on mercury.

Sorry to sound bolshy but why is the school pandering to individuals? The class is a school resource, it is more efficient if all resources are set up the same. Therefore, they don't get a choice. I have delayed some installations because a member of staff doesn't want a board, but they don't get something else, theirs is just installed further down the line.

 

EDIT: Ahh just read your later post that it is the head. Ask the head for a special exception for IT from a school specific thing and then act all shocked when the Head says no and ask if there is not special circumstances for people who don't want to do something...
