[bromcom] Bromcom SMTP

To those of you that are a Bromcom school - what are you doing / planning to do for email notifications when SMTP auth is fully deprecated come next september (2025)?

I've just setup Papercut with oAuth, however Bromcom don't offer anything like this. Is the only option doing it through Bromcom directly paying for the SMTP credits or using a third party SMTP service? I'll be honest SMTP is one of my less knowledgable subjects. We do still have an onprem exchange VM in a hyrbid config, however its purely for management, no mail runs through the server.

 

I've looked at High Volume Mail in 365, however this only seems to be for internal email.

Not sure how many emails your sending but lots of good things said about SMTP2GO: Reliable & Scalable Email Delivery Service on reddit - the free tier allows 1000 emails sent a month I believe

We use SMTP Sendgrid for Bromcom and psfinancials as we kept getting caught by Microsoft's outbound spam filters, mainly when sending out BACS confirmations once a week for 19 schools. Not had an issue since moving

High Volume Email from what i've read only looks to be for internal mail, not external

Just given it my vote! oAuth would be the simple solution, fingers crossed they are able to implement this

We use the SMTP credits via Bromcom, works very well and they have done quite a bit of work on DMARC to make sure they dont get blocked.

That may be the route we got down. I'm just running a message trace to see how many emails (internal + external) we send out per month. I'm guessing its going to exceed the free 3,000 Bromcom provides. The next step up is 10,000 per month for £99 P/A which isn't too bad to be honest. Would be nice if they implemented oAuth though, would let us cut the cost completely.

Dirt cheap really. However, I have started using the GOV.uk notify for our catering system. If they could plug into the Notify API which is coming soon that would be the best of both worlds. Includes text messages if needed as well. Also being a Gov.uk email domain its quite spam filter proof.

TBH i think we'll go down this route, the 10,000 per month will easily cover us - like you say its cheap enough to go direct with Bromcom

10,000 a month is less than 10 emails per student here - with the amount of random emails they love sending here we could require 4 times that!

They do bigger bundles, 10,000 is the lowest tier they do. It gets cheaper the more you add as well. Its a bit like when Groupcall and SMS became the thing to do, bombarding parents with 10 texts a day and they stopped reading them.

I'd recommend Mailgun Send - pricy if you include mailgun optimise, and it does mean you have to enter the world of email reputation etc. but id say its worth it.
