Windows 11 Log in issue

Hey everyone,

 

Anyone else having trouble with Windows 11 logging them into a black screen with just the white cursor? I've seen some suggestions about disabling fast startup, but that didn't seem to fix it for me.

 

I thought it was something to do with our weird split of roaming vs local accounts, but after testing and multipule hours of troubleshooting, it didn't make a difference. Local profiles seemed to behave more of then than not though. Using the latest release of W11 23H2 Enterprise.

 

Windows 10 doesn't have this issue at all. Any ideas what could be causing this or how to fix it? Am I missing some obvious? Thanks!

Ditch roaming profiles. Have you got the first logon animation disabled? I found disabling it causes delayed logons. Can you CTRL + ALT + DELETE and bring up task manager, see if there’s something not responding or taking up a lot of resources.

Could be display drivers? Sounds like the old days of impero where i think it turned out to be display driver issue.

 

Have you tried the old Control + shift + windows jkey + B to reload the graphics driver?

 

If you get into Task manager, try running explore.exe to force a reload of the GUI.

Roaming profiles are not supported on windows 11. If you need to roam look at fslogix to do the job.

Roaming profiles is old school, causes all sorts of issues with Windows 11.

We moved from all staff being on roaming profiles, and all students being on mandatory, to all being local. This sped up log-in times drastically & also ironed out other small issues

We have this happening to random computers round the school, (users have local mandatory profiles) the computer gets to "Preparing Windows" blue screen -long wait, black screen - very long wait. One very patient user left the computer on the black screen, 2 hours later the computer was working. CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task manger, and killing the Windows Update task, gets the computer working, so our current belief, is that we have a bad Windows update.

We're still running 4th/5th gen intel machines here in our IT rooms, 8GB memory & a sata SSD. So not the newest hardware however these are ours on average

 

 

Fresh login to generate local profile = Usually ~ 1 minute, longest I've seen was nearly 2 minutes, however this was on a crappy DFE laptop.. (yes we still have some of those "things")

 

Login on machine student has used prior = Less than 30 seconds

 

edit * Sorry completely overlooked that it said Windows 11. Our student machines arent on Windows 11 yet, only staff. Times above are for Windows 10

This is kind of hard to gauge, what group policies do you have applying at login currently? enable verbose so you can see exactly what is causing the long login times

 

This is a good start, gets rid of the blue splash screen on first login/creation of user profile

A few questions-Sorry,

Computers have SSD?

How much memmory?

Windows 11 capeable processor?

Size of local profile?

 

For us logon times are 20 -30 seconds, on computers with 16GB ram, SSD, and Windows 11, with a profile template that is 60 folders, 107 files, and under 2 Mb (lots of small link fies).

 

I also try to make most GPO's as computer not user, apart from the MSFT user polices (Microsoft Security Baseline polices)

4. Local profile can get big up to 10gb, but most files are OneDrive forced to Sync, no folders redirect.

5. Policies:

Show first sign-in animation -Disabled

Welcome Screen - Disabled

Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon - Enabled

Please take a long hard look at the profile, 10GB is very large. The less file copying on logon, the faster will be the logon, and the network is slower than the local SSD.

For our users the "Document" folder is mapped to a server, so no sync.

Please see my attchment, all staff are mapped to the same small profile template.

usually all pofiles are 500mbs, as we sync Documents folder to OneDrive,

we stopped using home folder or user profile, doesn't matter it's still loads slow with new profiles, so 500mbs profile takes 4 minutes to load same as 2-3gbs one

I suspect there will be a GPO trying to apply & it is timing out, causing the long wait. I've had it before with a printer GPO causing a 5min+ login

 

Have you turned on verbose & tested?

We are still using Roaming for Admin staff and Mandatory for Teaching Staff and Students, moving to windows 11 in September so testing now, anyone willing to share their GPO settings and any other settings that they apply for their local profile setup?

We use default profile settings, all local profiles. Found ditching printer and mapped drive deployment via GPO helped login speeds.

Just curious about how you deploy mapped drives and printers away from GPO if you don’t mind sharing?

We use PaperCut Print Deploy and CloudDriveMapper. Both launch do their thing after the user login process.

whats verbose?

 

eventviewer shows two policies take over a minute at the start up (Software Installation policy) and when login in (ConfigMgr User State Management Extension policy) not sure what to do about them!?

Pretty sure enabling verbose allows you to see what is happening when you login. You can then see what is taking so long and investigate accordingly. I’ve also removed all software deployment from GPO as well.
