Home Drives sync to OneDrive Software

Hello.

 

A few weeks back, I was having a chat with someone about OneDrive, and they said they have some software that sits in their file server and acts as the middle man to sync their drives to Onedrive.

 

Annoyingly, i have forgotten the name of the software, and it's bugging me. 🫥

 

Do you know of the above?

Is there still a need for some software to map one drive to a network drive anymore

 

I'm personally for me at work i don't think I've used my network drive for over a year now and in all the places I log into it will log me into one drive and all of my files are there i don't have a roaming profile and I don't let onedive auto sync down

 

And also I save a bit of money

 

Equally there are only a few members of staff that are using one drive as my test subjects and they don't have issues

 

By all means we haven't fully gone over one drive for the home dirs just yet as its a big change and no one likes changes but staff need to embrace it

 

Obvs I don't know your setup but if you don't have to spend anything then that could be spent on something else.

I wouldn't pay for a third party tool, just migrate your user home drives to OneDrive and phase them away from homedrives completely.

whilst totally agreeing with you staff will struggle to get away from shared drives the concept/look!!!!!

Using OneDrive for home folders is a great option when set up with Files on Demand. Staff and students took to this without any real issues.

 

Shared drives is a different beast and while the actual migration is really easy we've had to use Cloud Drive Mapper to give staff a consistent experience.

Be aware If the 3rd party Onedrive mapping software users WebDAV to map drives to Onedrive. That WebDAV is being depreciated in the next release of windows. I believe you can still use it in the next release, but it is not enabled by default.

In Windows think you can use Files on Demands for this

The only thing I was more worried about if a user dumps a load of files or anything large that would take a longer than a few seconds to upload, the decides to log off. What happens then?

Regarding OneDrive, user education. The OneDrive client is pretty quick, so shouldn’t be a problem, hasn’t been for us.

 

We also use CloudDriveMapper. The drives are a live link, so there will be the usual loading bar when you copy and paste files to the drives. Just wait for the loading bar to finish and the files will be in SharePoint.

Use of us FSLogix profiles. Then when they next logon it will continue uploading the large file where it left off.

Don't have shared computers

 

Do have fast internet

 

Don't require MFA otherwise people won't realise they're not signed in (and thus pay for conditional access)
