Print Server, Physical or Virtual?

Hi all

 

Currently have an ancient print server on a physical host that I need to get from 2012 to 2022. Is there any justification for it to be its own physical server? or will a VM do? I'd like it to be a VM as then I can remove another server from site.

VM. Can't see any positives to it being physical box.

100% VM. Why waste a valuable physical asset :-). I have not setup a print server on physical box for 10+ years.

The only physical serves we have are our hosts now, everything is virtual.

Our schools all have a dedicated VM for all the printers/copier's with the hardware spec requested from the leasing company.

IMO the only things which should be phyiscal nowadays is the Host which has the hypervisor on, so ESXI HyperV etc.. Only have 2 hosts at my secondary, 10 VM's between them. To be honest I could probably go down to 1 host, however I like having the redundancy of a DC on each host.

 

The only time I would consider not virtualizing is where you find older machines running very specific software/hardware to control various manufacturing machines etc..
