Without mentioning the company's name as that wouldn't be fair we have a quotation of £5.8k PA and even one other site at £6.7k for a 100MB/1GB leased line connection. That also includes a FTTC backup and filtering.

 

I just don't know if these are the current costs and feel that these prices are high. These are quotes for Primary Schools.

Are these prices relevant at the moment? I'd be interested to hear from other schools? If you'd prefer to PM please feel free to do so.

We are paying something like <£5000 for our 1Gb/1Gb line, which is our main Internet connection and <£1500 for our 1Gb/1Gb (100Mb upload) backup line. Both are FTTP.

how rural is the school, ive paid that much a good few years ago for 100 in a school that was 9km from the exchange.

 

these days were paying 299/mo for 100/1g and 400ish for 1gb.

If you are a primary and you can get services such as City Fibre or BT Ultrafast, these will be a fraction of the cost of a leased line. Also if it's your first LL be prepared for possible ECCs.

None of the school sites are near to inner city provision and won't get the likes of City Fibre. Some may have access to the BT Ultrafast network or even Virgin.

Leased Line pricing is quite location dependant and varies by provider based on their exchange footprint, network pop etc. If the telecoms provider does not have their own equipment in your local BT exchange, then they will have an additional cost to extend your connection to their nearest exchange. There is a per metre charge for this.

 

 

Of course, if the price includes firewall and/or web-filtering etc, the price will also vary depending on the service offered

Ultimately it depends on location and the carriers the ISP has access to as well as what you get for your filtering (i.e. do you get UTM with that or is it just basic filtering?). Also is it two routers (one for backup, one for primary) or is it just one? How much management does it include and what SLA do you get?

 

It does seem a bit on the high side but at £5.8k not massively so if it was for UTM with two routers, full management and leased line SLA. The only thing I'm more surprised about is that its for 100Mbps rather than 200Mbps as many of the carriers have special offers on at the moment.

 

Again though this does depend on location.

My schools pay a similar amount... One school gets 300 sym on a gig bearer with a sogea backup, the other only gets 100 sym on a gig bearer with a 60mb fttc for the same cost due to distance and available equipment.
