flashsnaps Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Eclipse are pritty good! Eclipse 2000 Hosting - cPanel Hosting - Reseller Hosting - Dedicated Servers
bizzel Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 CS New Media. I'm sure they're around on here, plus you used to get 25% off for being an EduGeeker. They've been rock solid for me so far and get back to you quickly.
Diello Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Our website has run on PlugSocket for a year without a problem. No downtime so as we've noticed.
PEO Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 ok plenty of options there if i redirect the schools domain name to the hosting company, will it effect my emial, mydesktop, and mydesktop?
kmount Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 By redirect, do you mean changing the IPS Tag? In theory, all you need do is create (or change) the A record for www to point to the IP of the new webhosting company.
kmount Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Address Record See here Put simply, it is what's needed to translate http://www.yourdomain.com into IP 1.2.3.4. If you have Email etc already set up on the domain, it will already have several A records, and certainly some MX (Mail Exchangers). Might be worth PM'ing me or posting the domain name so we can point you in the right direction.
kmount Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Replied to your PM with what would appear to be a solution in my eyes.

Just make sure you find a provider that gives you plenty of notice about IP address changes

ranj Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I am currently looking to get a domain name and for the price it seems fasthosts are offering the best deal as they can offer me .co.uk for free as well if i buy a .com. From reading the reviews on the internet there seems to be a lot of bad press about fasthosts. Does fellow edugeekers recommend fast hosts? I looked at uk2.net, godaddy, netfirms. If anyone uses fasthosts. can anyone recommend them? if not does anyone recommend any other companies just for domain name registering? thanks

From reading the reviews on the internet there seems to be a lot of bad press about fasthosts. Does fellow edugeekers recommend fast hosts? Well, for just one example of their (cough) support, take a look at this Register article on Edugeek's issues in the past: Fasthosts brings down Edugeek - and leaves it there - The Register Stephen
mb2k01 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I've used UK Web Solutions Direct for school + personal sites over the last 3-5yrs (after a LOT of searching / trying other companies before them!) I've found them to have an amazing quality service with fantastic support when needed. ukwsd.com

UKDarkstar Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I'd thoroughly recommend Layershift . Run a VPS with them and in the past have hosted all sorts of customer sites with them. Transferred VPS over and they handles all the data move overnight and kept me well appraised of what was going on at all times.
CSNM-Carl Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 What and how, im with them but don't get the 25% ??? It was a limited special offer we had last year.
