SIP and DECT phones suggestions

Hey all,

 

I'm looking for suggestions for the following CHEAP phones for connection to a home VOIP system.

 

* Corded SIP phone

* Cordless (e.g., Wi-Fi) SIP phone (this could be used at another location with Wi-Fi access to connect back to SIP server at hme

* Cordless (DECT) phone - to connect direct to SIP router at home with its own DECT base built in

 

Cost is a key parameter here, as I don't want to spend a lot on something which will only see a small amount of use. I'm still not fully clear whether Wi-Fi SIP phones exist other than DECT - please enlighten me as I'm new to the dark art of VOIP telephony.

 

Any suggestions please folks?

Is using a SIP client on a smart phone not an option? I have had a SIP number for a number of years and just have an app on my Mobile and use the wifi / normal data and get my calls in and out without any problems.

 

If you want to have a "normal" phone as such, I have in a the past used a version of https://www.best4systems.co.uk/siemens-gigaset-c475ip-sip-compatible-dect-voip-phone.html and it worked well and to the end user felt more like a normal phone which was a requirement to keep it simple. Alternativley you could just get normal DECT Cordless phones and put a SIP ATA behind them, I do this for my mum so a small Cisco ATA hidden away and the normal base-station plugs into it and the phones just work as normal but much cheaper / free for many things.

I've just bought a few second hand dect sip phones off marketpalce - 2 w52 and a w73. The w52 are for home and the the w73 is for work.

 

It was cheaper to buy 2 complete second hand w52 kits at £25-30 than a kit and a second handset!

 

There seems to be loads of the w52p around because they were handed out like sweets to the first people to convert to sip on BT.

Wi-Fi sip phones do exist, but they're more expensive and you've got to be very, very certain of the quality of your wi-fi!

We've just moved my mum, who the home phones are for, from her own 38mb adsl+phone on Sky, to piggybacking off my Toob fttp via a Ubiquiti wireless bridge. We get 900/900 and she gets about 70mbps and SIP still works beautifully! SIP service is £8 a month for 500 minutes via Freeola VoicePRO as they are the only people I could find who do free 0800 calls!

Its probably worth checking the firmware updates on these older phones. Yealink W52's arn't officially supported anymore on 3cx. They still work if you manually provision the bases though.

 

That said, I'd happily recommend them otherwise - they've done us well for the last 5 years.

 

Worth pondering in these days of Cyber security insurance.

 

The Yealink desk phones have wifi and dect modules available. Didn't seem to work well on our school wifi, but we didn't spend that long on it. Would probably work well on a home system though.

The W52 has had a firmware update less than a month ago. When I spoke to Yealink about them they said that they would be getting 2 more years of at least annual security only firmware updates even though they are a discontinued line because there are so many in the wild being supported by large telcos.

I have a W56H on BT. Jus ordered a W73P second hand off ebay. The BT service has not worked for me for months but I jus can't be bothered to call them up, it is free for me with jus calls but the calls costing. I regularly make abroad calls and it is like less than a tenth the cost using my own setup. For those of my family on WhatsApp it is even cheaper :-) Edited October 25, 2023 by Davit2005

The W73P came and I've been so impressed I've got another one for home so I now have 3 phones connected to the one Base station and then that base station connected to on-premise 3cx, even tested it with hosted 3cx solution and that works as long as you run a 3cx SBC on your network but the SBC was pretty painless to setup.
