Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I know there have been so many posts on this - but just so we can get an overview idea of techie's that plan to strike. Please answer "will you be striking or not" - don't need any comments, just a quick yes or no in the poll.
Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Hmmm, 17% are so far....... 83% aren't..... Keep them coming
Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 A bit more even, but I'm still a bit disappointed at the support from people. Eeesh, I don't know - anyways, keep the votes coming
plexer Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Do you mean you are dissapointed becuase people are not striking? My union GMB decided not to strike therefore I won't be. If you wanted to know if people in the unions that are on strike will be striking then you should have worded it towards that. Ben
K.C.Leblanc Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Nope, I just want to see this resolved as soon as possible. Last year I got the back pay in my December (which arrived on Xmas Eve) pay packet. If it's any later Christmas will be canceled, no presents for anyone, no cards, no decorations, no traveling to see my relatives (some of which are in their 80s and might not even be there by next Christmas). It's rediculous that we don't get an agreement on pay till several months after we should be receiving it.
elsiegee40 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Question a bit vague. Many schools are on holiday already. Another chunk of us aren't in Unison.... etc
Sylv3r Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I am striking but am currently looking to moving away from UNISON as I don't agree with the hard stance. Rumours are that they will be a THREE day strike happening in September. Currently looking at ATL, ASCL & GMB as alternatives.
Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 I understand it when people strike to keep together, but wish to move away because they don't agree - that's fair enough. @Elsie - it's a simple question with a simple answer - If you are striking you click YES, if not you click NO, if you arent striking because you aren't in Unison etc then you don't click at all. It really isn't hard.
Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 @Plexer - you don't need to be in a Union to strike. My Dad has told his boss he is striking and that he doesn't belong to a Union at all.
russdev Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 @HIGHTOWER Yes you do to be a union to to strike as otherwise you are breaking the law some info here.. What do I need to know about the legal background to industrial action? Industrial action - ATL's New 2 Teaching By law, employers have the right to dismiss staff who take part in unofficial or unlawful industrial action. It is very dangerous to take part in industrial action without the support of the union or without following the necessary balloting procedure (or both). Never ever strike without the backing of a union as you would be fired straight away.. Russ
Hightower Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Hmmm, strange Russ - he striked last year and wasn't in a Union then. It's not unofficial as Unison have declared. A lot of people here feel this strike is not needed or as others put it 'wrong'. I'm going to go the other way - why should any one of us have to pay a monthly fee in order to support what we feel just? Why should my pops pay £20 a month so he can support a cause?
elsiegee40 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Never ever strike with the backing of a union as you would be fired straight away.. Russ @Russ - you might want to edit your post.. You mean Never ever strike WITHOUT the backing of a union as you would be fired straight away.. Small but important difference
MkII Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Our LA are expecting union members and non members to strike - the non members in support of the union. They have emailed everyone and put up on the intranet procedures for everyone. Whilst I'd agree with the caution for anyone... If you strike your employer may take umbrage and you'll lose your job 'somehow', striking is breaking your contract with or without union membership. Personally I think it's great non members show support.
russdev Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 @elise Thanks @hightower Maybe me being thick not sure what angle coming from here...
CyberNerd Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 he striked last year and wasn't in a Union then. It's not unofficial as Unison have declared. Yes you do to be a union to to strike as otherwise you are breaking the law some info here. I think the situation may be explained by the fact that the employer has no right to know if your in the union or not.
laserblazer Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I belong to Voice which is a non-striking union. So I won't be striking but I also won't undertake any jobs that the striking admin staff would normally do. I will be the only first aider in a school of 540. I have said that I believe this is an unsafe ratio but it fell upon deaf ears.

plexer Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 If there is a picket line and you are not striking because you are not in one of the striking unions but feel too intimidated to go to work then you can explain that this was why you were unable to attend work and it shouldn't go against you. Ben
alexknight Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Hi I have varied views over the strike. I am fortunate enough to be in the situation where the pay increase is not that important. I do get annoyed at anyone who moans about their pay but is not prepared to strike for a decent wage? What annoys me even more is those moaners who are quite prepared to let others strike on behalf of them but are not willing to join a union or support it themselves. If you are not prepared to stick up for yourself then why do they expect others to do it on their behalf? So as far as I am concerned is put up or shut up. Alex

The needs of the few outway the needs of the many
localzuk Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Old Vulcan proverb.. The needs of the few outway the needs of the many Wrong way round The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Very utilitarian viewpoint.
cookie_monster Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 What annoys me even more is those moaners who are quite prepared to let others strike on behalf of them but are not willing to join a union or support it themselves. But how do you stop them striking on your behalf if you don't want them to? I do get annoyed at anyone who moans about their pay but is not prepared to strike for a decent wage? I moaned about pay in my last job but nothing happened so i moved jobs.
Gatt Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Wrong way round The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Very utilitarian viewpoint. Not using Kirk's amendment
localzuk Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Not using Kirk's amendment But that isn't a vulcan proverb...
Gatt Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Think that was Spock's reaction.. or rather Spock's Eyebrow's reaction
