Divaldo Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 We have a small new satellite building and the builders only ran one cat6 cable from the PoE switch in the main building cab over to the new building. I'd like a PoE phone and PoE wireless point in there. Does anyone know of any kind of splitter or switch that I can use to achieve this? Unfortunately there are no spare power sockets either. Thanks in anticipation.
Davit2005 Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 (edited) I don't think a splitter is best idea for this though as you need both devices to have power. Can you not get electrician to put a fused spur in for a PoE switch, this would be another good option and give you possibilities later on. You could get an in wall AP that has multiple wired ports, some of these can provide PoE on a port to supply a phone. I had some Cisco 145 in walls that do this but there are other makes too. Someone much cleverer than I will be able to give the science but I only learnt late in life that you shouldn't cable copper between buildings due to ground differences or loops, or something similar. I may be over egging it if the satellite building is a portacabin or some such but just thought I'd put it out there. In regards to your actual question: If you have no power sockets you are all out of luck. If you can get 2 sockets you could ensure your AP has a through network port and then put one PoE injector on the inbound line, then take a cable out of the AP, add an injector and plug into the phone. Makes me shudder slightly thinking about it but it should work. Alternatively, depending on the distance, put the AP up using a PoE injector and see if a DECT SIP phone will cover the distance. 3
ThatBoringBloke Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Some PoE phones can act as a 'pass through'* device meaning that it has two ethernet ports on it so that one can go to the phone and the outher out to another device, so this may work. I'd suggest a PoE mini switch as a better option if feasable though. *may not be the correct term.

Aprice Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 We use the Unifi Switch Flex now and again to feed multiple CCTV cameras off one POE port. Its POE in on eth1 and POE out on all ports.

It is indeed due to the risk of a potential developing between "Ground" in the two locations. It is an unlikely, but highly dangerous situation. Please take advice on this. 1
robintech Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 I'd check the power the passthrough can do, got the D-Link version of these and from my notes Maximum PoE Budget 18W with 802.3at / 8W with 802.3af input power , maximum power consumption of R750 is PoE+ : 22.34W D-Link Switch Crashes with one AP connected might be POE demandalso the VLANs were a nightmare to set up but seemed to start working eventually.

PoE IP phones: do often have "pass-through" network ports - we have some classrooms with only 2 network ports where we want a wired connection for PC, phone and wireless access point, so we've used one port for the phone and passed through to the desktop. Phones tended to have 100mbps connections, although newer models tend to be better - fine for connecting a desktop machine, and might actually be okay for a wireless access point as long as you know you might get limited bandwidth. If you're running a new cable yourself, you could look at pre-terminated fibre and a small fibre-capable switch - I think Ubiquiti do an 8 or 16 port switch that can be connected via fibre.

We use them now to split a port between a PoE device and a few other regular LAN connections. The specs say they'll do either one Class 3, or, two Class 1/2 devices (assuming an 802.3at power input). They'll do VLANs if you need them, although the interface is a little eccentric.

'Floating' ground. So the earth potential in that building, for whatever reason, isn't the same as in the building you've run an earth cable from. So, there's a potential difference between the earths, and current can then flow.
