tmoon-mint Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Recently splashed out on a MacBook Air M2. Yes, it's expensive and no, the hardware can't be upgraded, but I love it to bits. Very thin but still sturdy, great display, great sound, fanless (!) charging lead is actually good. No USB-A for the money, but it is an Air model after all. If you like Macs I think the current models are particularly good designs. Another vote for the M2 Macbook Air. Best laptop I have ever had by far.

Or would you feel lag is down to RDP or the connection I only have 150/30mb FTTP services. Any lag in RDP being experienced on a brand new Mac is almost certainly going to be down to the connection and not the device itself.

I am not sure I want to get a laptop with only 8GB of RAM if I can’t upgrade it. Am I better getting a MacBook Air and two screens rather than caring the side the connector is of the laptop. Currently my Mac connector just cover the very bottom right corner of my screen.

I am just concerned the MacBook does not have enough RAM for virtualisation. So would you go with a MacBook Air and two external monitors so that the screen is not an issue! You need to pick the 8GB then add the 16GB upgrade option tickbox if you’re looking on Apples site Steve

As someone else has mentioned I believe you need to choose the option for the added 8gb on the Apple website. You could give this website a go, they were my previous supplier for iPads/Apple technology in my last role, there is an option to add an extra 8gb of ram (£200) - https://www.wearesync.co.uk/product/apple-macbook-air-m1-8core-256gb-space-grey/ I will add... that the only gripe with mine, is that it only has two usb-c ports. However, I rarely find myself needing more. If I did, there are plenty of 'docks' available on Amazon from companies such as Anker etc.

IIRC the Apple silicon Macbook Air's can only support a single external display. However, Apple's laptop chips are so far ahead of the game in terms of CPU/GPU performace, thermals and battery life that I wouldn't buy a laptop with anything else in it right now. Yes, this is true. *But* even Macbook Pro's do not support DisplayPort daisy chaining (MST) - So you can't just buy a cheapo dock to get multiple monitors. You'll need a thunderbolt one that supports this. There's no hardware reason Apple can't support it, they just don't. Even our bargain basement Chromebooks support it so it's annoying that Apple don't.

But was just a reference to your finding 16gb one If a device isn't upgrade long-term, even in terms of easy storage/ram upgrades personal opinion is it goes in the no pile! Steve

Macbook Pro 14/16 with M1/M2 pro support dual monitors BUT only via Thunderbolt. If you plug in to an MST-only dock (eg the majority of docks..) you will get a duplicated image on both of the addin monitors (Although it will still be a "secondary") display. There's no reason for Apple to be like this, as even our bargain basement ChromeBooks support MST & multiple monitors

Our call centre will be getting 13 inch M2 Airs with 16GB and everyone else will be getting 15inch M2 Airs with 24GB. The website developers and engineers in the testing pool have all said that the M2 Airs work for their needs. The media team will be getting Macbook pros as the airs struggled with some of their more intensive work.

I am connecting over RDP to my desktop machine to work from home.
