Currently have students using mandatory profiles, with only documents, etc being redirected.

Updated to the latest version of Unity and they now store details in the AppData folder, which get created and deleted at logon/logoff which is causing a fair few issues.

I already have the staff Appdata folder redirected, so I am wondering if there is anything to stop me from doing the same for a small set of students who need to use unity.

What are peoples thoughts of Student Appdata folders being redirected?

Cheers

Never* redirect AppData. We moved to requiring seating plans so that apps that had per-computer configuration didn't interrupt lessons.

(I've not looked at FXLogic, maybe that would change my mind?)

Adobe CC Premiere Rush seems to store chunks of important stuff in the AppData. The whole suite goes berserk if you redirect it though!

Generally, as above - don’t redirect.

Thanks for replies

Just checked and turned out I removed app data redirect for staff when I set them to local profiles.

Was a bit confused when I went to check and the settings wasn’t applied, so I checked my notes and I changed it over 18 months ago.

Students that that use unity are taught in two different rooms over the two week timetable.

Will change those students to local profiles and see how it goes.

Plenty of subjects have constraints on where they can teach what due to technical/practical/equipment limitations.

Be wary of non-standard, depreciated solutions that people come to rely upon.

I'd love to used to run full roaming profiles in the old days and the network just worked perfectly for years on end.

Sadly redirecting appdata turns into a mess as there are such badly written programs that they try and store data any old where.

Roaming appdata is awful.. We are still using roaming profiles.. Looking to move away from this next half term.

Causes some very long login times for some users with larger profiles, especially on a new PC they haven't used before.

Looking to move them onto Local profiles, with local documents redirected to their H:\ folder & leave appdata residing on the local profile

We use Mandatory profiles with redirected appdata, not had any severe problems with it, the odd corrupted appdata but that is easy to resolve.

I am always looking to streamline our processes, is everyone just using Local profiles now, how do you manage with disk space?

There is a GPO which can remove local profiles after a certain amount of time not being logged in. Computer Config > Admin Templates > System > User Profiles > Delete User profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart.

We will be setting this to 30 days, so any user profile which has not been logged into after 30 days will be removed.

We will only be using this for staff accounts - students use a mandatory profile.

We have roaming profiles with appdata redirected to their home drives.

Not experienced any issues with this from the days of XP up to 10.

The biggest roaming profile size I can see is 6.9MB. The smallest is 1.3MB

You can omit a lot of the stuff from roaming in user profiles via GPO in order to keep the size small: User Config > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles > Exclude directories in roaming profile

The only size hog we have noticed with roaming AppData is the Teams folder which is consistently 500mb+.

We stopped installing Teams for this very reason. We just tell everyone to use the web version. It does everything anyway.

I use roaming profiles with redirected appdata. There can be some pretty large folders in there which cause slow login times. Local profiles just won't work here though so I am currently going through and finding all of the worst offending folders and trialling a GPO that excludes them from syncing in a roaming profile.

Just out of interest, why would local profiles not work for you?

I was in a similar position, we used to use roaming profiles and we had some pretty large ones, the largest being 9GB. Now use local profiles, longest login time now is ~just under 2 minutes, when logging into a new machine.

Because I have already tried to get teachers to stick to a seating plan in their lessons before, they just don't do it. Then there is the non ICT subjects that book whichever room is available for their lesson.

Those things are fine with local profiles. It's only the profile - not their documents, so it can go wherever. As long as your profile template (Default) is clean then logins should be quick.

We went from Mandatory (which is even fussier) to local last year and it's been fine. Kids can logon wherever - the profile deletes after a month if it's unused after then.

How are you doing that at the moment I've been finding delprof2 and GPO profile removal settings very unreliable. Got some 120GB SSDs here that can fill up over a year.

Just using the GPO removal setting (set to 30 days I think). No issues with SSDs of the same size (and indeed the 64GB ones I just retired).

Hmm I am using Computer > Policies > Admin Templates > System/User Profiles > Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart > Delete user profiles older than (days) 90

And have still had PCs run out of space.

Maybe I will try changing it to 60 days then 30? Is that the exact setting you are using?

Yes, same setting. 90 days is too long. 30 is longer than it really needs but it's a reasonable compromise.

Just be careful using that setting on something like an IT admin PC (I log on as a local user so no domain access from my account) as if I was off for 30 days I'd come back to no documents and a large degree of stress!

I was under the impression that this GPO no longer works properly, mainly due to Windows updates resetting the time on user.dat file and also some new security feature added recently to lock user profiles down more.

Has this GPO been working OK for you all?

Neither the GPO or Delprof2 work for me. Only thing I can do at the moment is clear off profiles manually with DelProf2 when I get complaints.
