sims drive very large - 869Gb - what to do?

(I am not IT) The drive we have for sims is very large, see pic. What can be done? The sims>sims folder is quite small at only 40.8gb and I know there are about 37.8gb of student photos within it (ie when they take the individual pics of each year group to upload them to sims) . If I look at properties of the other folders ie Attend; Documentation; etc none of them are big?

In the parent folder I don't know where the other 800+gb s coming from or what should be done. There are some student shortcuts in the folder - is it including these within the total calc? Should these shortcuts be there?

ok thanks. From quick scan of that other thread, FYI we do use intouch. Also I should add SIMS was new in this school in Jan 2018 so it hasn't had long to build up this big!

Have a look for extra backup files floating around. Solus will make one every time you do a patch, so they can build up. Ours are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLSIMS\MSSQL\Backup

This - either of these apps will give you a visual view of where the space is going so it's really easy to find out.

 

My bet is on a load of backup files not being pruned... or an out-of-control LDF.

yeap, filled with backups in the ms sql thingy. delete all but the latest one.

I had a script which ran daily, which followed the runbak backup to robocopy all of the MSSQL backups off to a NAS.

 

Only then had issues when the NAS filled up [emoji13]

If I log onto the sims server and go to this location, the Backup folder is 633GB so it seems that is a large part of it! Our location of that is below. I deleted a couple of the files named eg 'SIMS_cp363_mnw_20210512_105500.bak' from April 2021 and of approx 21 and 31GB in size. The SIMS drive size fell to 793GB afterwards (as long as I emptied the recycle bin).

so that's the main area so far. I will install the windirstat programme later and have a wider look. Final quetion some of the old backups seem to have two anaming conventions:

 

some are like this:

sims (sims2016) 20210404T060240.bak

some are like this:

SIMS_cp363_mnw_20210512_161600.bak

and a couple are like this:

sims_20220419_154849.bak

 

is this just dependent upon how they were created eg within SOLUS; or if a manual patch was installed; or if a manual backup was made?

Yes, the naming is just dependent on the patching or backup method.

 

I usually just go in there, sort by date and see what can go. In reality you're only going to need recent ones, anything older will lose too much.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the drive properties for R: just display the size of the Network Drive and not the Share? For example if your home directories are on another shared, but on the same server drives, will be included.

The database size is probably not be the issue, its not normal to have that in the SIMS drive, that will be somewhere else.

 

I would right click > properties on each of the main folders in the SIMS folder and see which one is taking up all that space.
