True Microsoft Cloud Education Setup without the need for Active Directory -thoughts?

Art, Drama and DT. These three subjects create mahoosive files for us. We currently use a (backup up) HA cheap drives NAS with some mapped drives to store files for these pupils. Part of the teams script I use also maintains the shared folders for pupils on a mapped drive. It is simply not feasible for us to sync these work files with the cloud, especially when we are talking gigabytes of raw workfiles per pupil. Cheap SSD caching on these NAS works wonders when the bell goes and people click save. There is no way in hell these files would sync to onedrive in short order! The same can be said for certain software (looking at you finance) that also create large local shared files, im sure there are cloud equivalents but for whatever reason it has been declined or not migrated.

 

We have similar requirements in our school and have used onedrive and sharepoint storage without issues. We have a 500mbit line and its just as fast to copy to the cloud as it is on the internal network really. Onedrive has something silly like 1tb of space for each user so no issues with capacity.

 

We don't "sync", we work entirely off the web interfaces for students and it seems to work well.

 

You points about cost are correct though, but it's certainly the future

I've moved serverless over the last 3 years. We have 1 to 1 for all year groups with intune managing it all, teams and Sharepoint managing the staff data. I'm just looking at A5 licensing for AV stuff as we have Sophos and for a teams-based phone system.

 

Any advice on where to move DHCP, mines still on the AD server we don't use anymore?

Any advice on cloud-based servers to run stuff that can't be clouded? for example we have a business studies exam thing and an OCR thing runs off a server setup. I was going to just get a well specced nuc or something to run it off. Is a cloud server on Azure worth it?

 

We're using Pebble for serverless catering system

 

Canon uniflow for printing is also really good and worth a look.

For DHCP we moved to the core switch stack where we have one and to the routers in the smaller schools.

 

If you are pushing to remove anything hosted locally, Azure VMs can be a lot cheaper than you think. You are billed by the hour so if you set a tight schedule of up-time for those few servers you still need, and automate them on/off, you end up paying 10s of pounds a year (Depending on required spec).

Thanks, my current core switch is about 8 years old if not more. I had a little look and its DHCP function is rubbish. We're getting a new school built starting Feb which will have new switches in so i'll defer until then. I'll just tell people i'm serverless in the meantime when in secret i have a server running DHCP

 

I'll have a look at the VMs. In theory i only need them running when we have an exam or maybe just during the school day

none of the pretty basic network stuff we had could host a DHCP server. My first thought was a couple of raspberry PIs dotted about, but I ended up using a windows app from dhcpserver.de which runs on the office PC and an intel NUC which runs ptrg and similar. Does pretty much everything you'd want and has been super reliable.

DHCP could be done by a router or Layer 3 switch - Do you have VLANs?

Could you not have used Senso for the cloud filtering? Looking at their website it says they now do cloud based content filtering.

You can do offsite AD with your DC being in azure. AVD allows your machines to be Azure only joined for any legacy apps but best avoid if you can. Hardest thing is Adobe Creative suit.

Hi, I was just looking into Printix and ran a free trial and it seems you have to keep a machine turned on at site 24/7 for this to work 100%. Have you tried the program and found the same or did you work around it.

I don’t run a machine on site all the time. Why do you need a machine on for this to work?

Something has to communicate back to tell the cloud printers what the gateway is.
