DFE - Gigabit Broadband for Schools

Hi All

 

Anyone else get an email from DFE aiming to get Gigabit Broadband for Schools implemented? We got an email from them saying around 40 or so schools in our county are eligible!

 

 

Going to setup a call with them soon to discuss this but looking good especially as we also had a handful of schools qualifying for the connect the classroom project

The RFI to then go to ITT are currently going via DPS on CCS RM6095.

 

If memory serves me correctly there are 14 lots which are for different geographic areas and each one will be taken by an individual carrier. £110million up for grabs I believe.

 

I've got the full list of schools to be connected by it if anyone is interested....

I'd post the list on here but its 169,961 characters long and the max allowed is only 15,000!

actually i'm not allowed to distribute the docs. You need to be on RM6095 (which we are) to be able to get the RFI.

 

But if you want to email me if you're school is on it I think that would probably be ok

 

Please note the list may still change and is dependent on the procurement going through and being awarded.

I was contacted as a trust before the summer holidays with 14 of our schools indicated as being on the list. Probably whoever was the main trust contact on the CtC programme will be contacted - if you weren't part of Connect the Classroom then the initial email will probably go to the HT.

We had a list sent over by DFE, some schools that are not on the list have started to query if they can be added on the list, we recommended them to the DFE and DFE replied that they are "Commercially Delivered Rollout" Any ideas what this means?

yes. that means that a fibre provider will be delivering their FTTP service using their own money rather than being part of the DFE subsidised rollout.

 

Best using "town name + FTTP" into google often comes up with some results.

My previous schools were gigabit internet via Gigler, and then City Fibre - I've been badgering my contacts at City Fibre about every 6 months to get my new schools connected - no dice so far.

 

My Son's school has now been connected after I stuck my oar in at their governors open meeting pointing out that they could now do gig internet and rent gig dark fibre for less than the cost of their current internet and upgrading their point to point links to gig (they're a 4 school mini-MAT in less than a square mile with one school with 300mb internet and 100mb p2mp between schools ) not sure their IT guy was super happy, but it's cheaper and better!

This will be available for ourselves, RM, Wave9, Exa etc to utilise as the network has to be wholesaleable.

One of my schools has been contacted and confirmed. Others contacted and rejected (based on FTTP being available soon anyway).

 

So expect the list to be very much already decided
