Summer installs 2022 - How's it going?

With only a week or so to go for most, we do have to ask how your summer work has gone.

Are you done, almost there, or has it all gone a bit wrong?

We started back today.

 

Always fun when teachers decide to have a classroom move around without informing me so I now have to get lastminute extra long cables.

9 New teaching rooms fitted with Teaching walls and Smart board 6000s screens.

 

Going well so far but we shall see next week when the students return...

Not going to be ready for a lot of stuff, backend bits will only annoy us. Going to be tight with somethings finishing up Friday.

Massive jobs are done, new fibre runs and groundworks to accommodate them. New Wi-Fi is just about done.

New helpdesk implemented and just needs tidying up and things like locations need adding.

Moving users and devices to a single domain is getting there but won't be fully done. Not an issue, just an annoyance

Big lecture theatre refurb project is going to be delayed as the company fitting the AV hasn't delivered. Not impressed.

A batch of PCs has been delayed, meant to be 5-10 days but a single part has delayed it. May not arrive until the end of September.

Trying to get new staff laptops built, as well as a large batch of Pupil devices. Pupil devices were from before I joined and they are consumer devices so won't SCCM and are AMD so AutoPilot not properly working. Joy.

 

Saying all that, still in a better state than I thought we would be!

For the stuff we’ve actually physically been responsible for we’re pretty much on schedule - final parts of the new central teams office being stood up tomorrow ready for Thursday.

 

Stuff we’re relying on third parties for however is a different story… IRIS/BioStore, here’s looking at you….[emoji52]

Moved entire school from 2 buildings to 1. New IWBs in all teaching rooms, new firewalls, new APs and wireless controller, Salto door entry system on most doors and new AV system in main hall.

Well, everyone's in for INSET on Thursday, and today I've been told about 13 new members of staff starting Thursday. Multiple needing laptops...

 

That's on top of all the ones I knew about already.

 

So... going about as normal then!

Not had a great deal of installing to do, mostly a back-end work sort of summer, update Office by GP, upgrade anything still on 2012 R2, build some services.

 

Did put in a new suite in early July though.

Having had to move an entire buildings kit to a new one is something I've had to do in the past. You have my total sympathy.

Yeh we only got the keys in June so its been a mad dash to get everything ready for the start of term. I can only hope I don't have to do this again anytime soon

Ours has been a complete disaster

 

Our Delivery of monitors was delayed by three weeks leaving me with 60 PCs I couldn't setup due to the old being incompatible

 

The installation of our Leased Line from Wave9 has been a nightmare (they've been great and done everything within their power to resolve the issues) but had massive issues with OpenReach

 

We're currently having our complex needs unit relocated to another building on site which is to be expanded. This was to be handed over on the 30th to allow it to be kitted out, site manager had a walk around today and not happy with quality of work and several serious issues were pointed out. We're now being told handover will be on Monday/Tuesday (the staff are back on Monday luckily only a training day)

In-place upgrades from Office 2016 to 2019 on PCs that used to run Windows 10 1903.

 

Anything built on 20H2 worked.

 

I may be rebuilding quite a few installs!

Yes I should add, SIMS Connected broke straight away. Not really working three days later, so I’ve paused deploying it to any more staff.

 

I’ve been smashing the ‘it’s your fault’ fast bowls for six.

Had 30 Windows laptops to unbox and set up, security mark etc, same with 120 chromebooks, and our printer MFP contract had ended and we have signed a new one with all new devices, and an all new server install with papercut etc. So it was supposed to be a very busy summer. Same with getting a new Windows 10 build done with the latest Windows 10 + adobe/office suite.

 

However we never had any of the deliveries at all - no chromebooks, no laptops, and the print solution is delayed too. So I will have to squeeze all of this in during term time now! Plus our contractor wasn't able to get the Windows 10 image finished before the holidays ended so I was unable to rebuild our machines (they have a 4 year old install now so due for a re-image. But I was only going to rebuild a few of them as a test anyway, wasn't planning on doing the entire network.

 

So instead the summer was pretty quiet, I spent most of it at home, doing server maintenance, I was meant to move all of our staff over from Exchange 2010 over to Office 365, but I was told to but a halt to that for now because I was only going to move 1 years worth of e-mails and the staff need more time to sort out their mailboxes as a lot of them use their Inbox as their "My Documents" basically organizing everything around it, and losing that would be a nightmare for them!

 

So I had a fairly relaxing Summer but at the cost of the rest of this year potentially being a nightmare! Lots of year 7 SIMS invites / parentapp stuff to sort out this week. Nightmare as you can only do Admitted students apparently and we can't Admit them until they are here, so it's very hard to do things before-hand.
