Benjaminbl12 Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Hi all, I'm the IT Manager at Twynham School - Do you know if 'it's the thing' to start getting devices onto Windows 11? When Windows 10 came out, we really jumped on that but we've held fire on this one. All our PCs in the IT office are on Win11 but I'm just reluctant to move staff and students over... I assume you can do things like Sysprep in Win11 but what about the start menu import changes as I know they're now based on JSON? I did attempt making an image when Win11 very first came out but it didn't go very well haha! Many thanks!

Benjaminbl12 Posted June 7, 2022 Author Posted June 7, 2022 This is true about compatability! Thankfully, being on Dell equipment, almost all of them have TPM. Most of our kit are also on Intel Core 8th gen+ bar maybe a few dozen on 7th gen. Going to wait until 22H2 and see if that changes the game!
Wubbalubbadub Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 We have recently deploy a fleet of 350 laptops for the primary school staff in our trust. We have deployed them with Windows 11. Anything new we buy, Windows 11 goes on. We haven't had any problems with it so far. Very happy.
Guest Guest Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 I upgraded my machine but had some issues with software we use so had to roll back. I'm gonna hold off until we're able to upgrade site wide, just 20 machines are incompatible
Rob_D Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 I think we've got a tech room on Windows 11 for some "live testing", seems to be okay and things like start menu and desktop redirect have ported over from win10 fine. Biggest thing for us is hardware compatibility.

Benjaminbl12 Posted June 8, 2022 Author Posted June 8, 2022 I do agree - Windows 11 is just another stop gap for what was already a great OS (Win10). Windows 10 had it's caveats but was solid. I do see our school and Trust moving over at some point, just not now
mjhardisty Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Looking to move machines that are capable of Windows 11 soon as possible. As with Rob_D we have deployed a small set of test devices to staff and students and will look to iron out any issues with policies or software as we go along. Best to push the technology forward and equip students with the latest software where possible. Fazza Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 We use SIMS and ESS are not supporting it on Windows 11 until September 2022 so we wont be installing it on Staff computers until then (assuming ESS supporting it isnt delayed that is).

True (although has that date moved recently? I thought I'd read Jan 2025 before). But might as well start now and take our time rather than rushing everything summer 2025.

An issue for schools with hundreds of ageing machines. Gives you 5 years to make sure all machines at at least 8th Gen Intels, otherwise there's a risk running an OS that is not supported or receiving security updates ...... 1

Rockpile99 Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 So far during my testing I've managed to deploy Windows 11 to all of our PC and laptop models (many of which are over ten years old) so Microsoft's hardware requirements are really all about sales. I even got it working on a 2010 iMac just because I was bored one day. Will we be moving to Windows 11 any time soon? In all honesty I don't see the point - our LTSC version of Windows 10 will be supported for many years to come and is working well for everyone. If anyone is desperate for rounded corners and a more annoying start menu then I'll put it one their machine but otherwise I'm choosing not to complicate my life.
mjhardisty Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 The software seems to run on unsupported devices - whether that is without issues I'm not sure. Certainly those machines will have potential security exploits due to old, or no TPM and Spectre/Meltdown vulnerabilities of older CPUs. As a vendor and business, Microsoft possibly realise that they can't go on providing operating system software as an endless freebie and are now moving to the Apple model of forcing users to buy new hardware!
MatthewL Posted July 2, 2022 Posted July 2, 2022 Yesterday was our offiical date to roll it out on any newly imaged kit. Half our team have been on it a while and to be honest I am not in any rush to reimage as what I have works. Only issue we have had are some minor ones with AoVPN but it won't affect many for the majority just down to our setup. I've got it on my new home laptop, desktop won't run it but seems good so far, nothing major found with it.
JRowley Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I think a lot of schools jumped on 10 purely because they skipped 8 and 8.1, so were pretty keen to move on. Personally I'm keen to move to 11 to maintain parity with home use but it'll be next year at the earliest, and even then it'll be challenging due to hardware compatibility.

LTSC 2019 supported till 2029 :-) https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-enterprise-ltsc-2019 For this reason alone I put 2019 on my digital signs and didnt upgrade them to 2021
