Office 365 Backup - Synology NAS

Hi All,

 

I'm hoping those who use a Synology NAS to backup Office 365 will be able to confirm if the following NAS would be up to the job of backing up around 4TB of data from 400 users plus all our class teams and department teams.

I also plan to only run this NAS for backups once a week, the rest of the time it'll be shutdown so it's an 'Offline' backup. Has anyone else done this with the Synology and does it cope with it?

We use the Synology DS920+ with 4 x 4TB Ironwolf HDD's to backup our O365 tenancy. Once backup is completed (weekly) it shuts down and is effectively an offline backup and has been working flawlessly for us for the past few months. While I can't comment on the model you have mentioned, for us the DS920+ has been terrific and extremely cost effective.

Just over 400 users and around 30 sharepoint sites. I can't say I've had the need to look at the resource monitor to be fair.

Thank you for that. I wanted to go rack mount just to make storing the thing easier, but it seems you pay twice the price (If not more when spec is lower too) for a rack mount model. I think it'll go desktop version and just buy a shelf for it.

Agreed, the rackmount version is nice but you do pay a premium for it.

I use a DS1513+ to do just this. Should consider what RAID configuration you want to use.

 

I have 3 8TB drives under RAID 5 which gives me a good 14TB to use. I have found this to be more than adequate for a weekly backup of around 600 students and 100 staff + Sharepoints.

Personally got 4 synology's all purchased from eBuyer, no issues. Go for the plus version what ever happens and try to allow for a bit of future growth i.e. get at least one more bay than you need. Always purchased without drives then filled with my own.

 

Still running a DS1621+ and a DS1517+, sold a DS1515+ and a DS918+ both for reasonable money as they were still supported at the time.

 

I'm using Synology to backup O365 stuff but only one mailbox and one users OneDrive. I know the CPUs can be a bit behind other manufacturers but I cannot fault them, some older units had CPU issues and PSU issues but I think they have been resolved now.

Alternatively, look at cloud-to-cloud 365 backup so that you're not constantly burning your internet bandwidth. We use Barracuda 365 backup which gives us daily increments and is easy to restore down to an individual file inside a Team, OneDrive or SharePoint repository. We've used it in anger about half a dozen times now.

I cant seem to find this answer and it might seem very simple but... if a user is deleted from AD and then 365, will the synology still keep the last backup even though they are no long present in our 365?

Just checked on ours and I can see 365 account backups still there from last years students that left in Sept (Yr13) and the previous year as well and also Staff that left in Sept 2021 are still there.

it turns out I have a couple of DS218+ boxes, I'd forgotten about. (were still running but the task was redundant) I got one to back-up my whole tenant in 20 minutes... what a great tool!

 

It seems I have the old azure need a cc to identify yourself (like wsus for business) and fill in a form to allow Teams backups.. (shame) not Synology's fault.

 

My tenant is using 2.4Tb so cutting close to the 2.6Tb on the DS218+ but I'll upgrade storage if it works well. I've set it for a weekend download.

It doesnt need a lot of resources. I use a DS218 at home with a pair of ironwolf drives for my personal family onedrive backup. This is a total of around 3Tb of data on my home accounts including email. This is a daily backup too.
